A candidate runs only in the big 11 states, wins them by a handful of votes while the other candidate wins 100% - for the sake of argument - in all other states.

We can get these numbers

green candidate  33.9 million votes  - 26.36%  -  271 ev
gray candidate  94.7 million votes - 73.64%  - 267 ev

what happen next?

I think the best thing to happen would be that Electoral Votes, allocated by Congressional District or At-large, should go to the candidate with an absolute majority.

Due to angry mobs accross the nation, the President-elect would probably be assasinated.

hopefully people would see that the electoral college was an outdated relic and it would be abolished by constitutional amendment.

At least three electors with a conscience would change their votes.

I'm trying to imagine what kind of candidate would win those 11 states.  He obviously wouldn't be a Democrat because the gray guy wins DC Tongue

You could almost certainly win with a smaller percent of the popular vote if you take the opposite approach and work on the smaller states instead. They receive extra weight under the EC, so you don't need as many people voting for you. Long story short: the EC is a relic that needs to go ASAP.

Green wins. It would be a very unsatisfying result.

It's also implausible. Some neighboring states have obvious similarities of demographics, so it is highly unlikely that some politician would win Virginia with 51% of the vote and lose North Carolina with 80% of the vote -- or Texas with 51% of the vote and lose 80% of the vote in both Florida and Kansas (Texas, politically, is best described as Kansas grafted onto Florida).

The United States was about as un-homogeneous in its vote in 2008 as it has been since the eve of the Civil War, with about 2/3 of all electoral votes being decided by 10% or more. Rarely does any candidate both lose several states by 20% or more and still win. That, I believe, will change. The culture wars that polarized America between comparatively-secular regions (most notably New England, the Middle Atlantic region, the Detroit-Chicago-Twin Cities triangle, and the West Coast) against the areas of religious fundamentalism, mostly in the South and Great Plains.
