Using this website that I just recently discovered:

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/8088/ElectPandC.html

I was looking for states that have tended to go against the grain in the primaries, i.e., vote for candidates who didn't end up winning the nomination.  Here are the states that (by my count) have voted against the eventual nominee the most times going back to 1980, and the list of losing candidates they voted for:

Alaska:
1980: Kennedy
1984: Hart
1988: Jackson, Robertson
1992: Brown
1996: Buchanan
2008: Romney
(seriously, wtf Alaska?)

Arizona:
1980: Kennedy
1984: Hart
1992: Tsongas
1996: Forbes
2000: McCain
2008: Clinton

Massachusetts:
1980: Kennedy, Bush
1984: Hart
1992: Tsongas
2000: McCain
2008: Clinton, Romney

Michigan:
1980: Brown, Bush
1988: Jackson
2000: McCain
2008: Clinton*, Romney
(The * is for obvious reasons.)

South Dakota:
1980: Kennedy
1984: Hart
1988: Gephardt, Dole
1992: Kerrey
2008: Clinton

Anyone else have any weird combinations of primary victories they're interested in?

Another thing I was thinking of doing at some point was to find all the diehard Bush/Clinton states.....which would be the states where they voted for either a Bush or a Clinton in every possible primary from 1988-2008 *and* voted for either a Bush or Clinton in every general election from 1988-2004.  I'm sure there are a few such states.....though I don't think there are any if you add on the condition of voting for Bush in the 1980 GOP primaries.

Haha, Alaska...

I heard a saying a while back, something that goes "Iowa chooses candidates, New Hamsphire chooses presidents" or something like that. Funny how that went this year.

True, though of course it *didn't* vote for Edwards, but rather Hillary Clinton, who was another candidate who didn't win the nomination.  But before 2004, I think it voted for every national winner in the primaries going back to 1988.  In 1984 though, it voted for Hart.

Speaking of which, here's the map comparing primary winners on the Democratic side in 1984 to 2008:

green = voted for either Mondale or Jackson in 1984 and Obama in 2008
red = voted for Mondale in 1984 and Clinton in 2008
blue = voted for Hart in 1984 and Obama in 2008
gray = voted for Hart in 1984 and Clinton in 2008

LA, MS, SC, and VA are the states that voted for Jackson in '84.
