I was not aware that all official governmental forms included options for one's ethnicity. Frankly I was *this* close to using my PPT powers of rejecting a frivolous bill outright, but decided not to.

Motion to table.

Would there be some way by which to distinguish between different mixes? There's a slight difference between mixed Anglo-Scots & mixed Anglo-Congolese. Wink

Come on Lewis, chill out. We have had dumber legislation than this, and it is harmless. Nay. Smiley

Perhaps so. Most of the time we've tabled it. Tongue

Nay on cloture for now

I'm thinking of proposing an amendment to remove government forms from being allowed to ask about race at all

Works for me, I was going to propose that but I tried to in the Mideast when I was Governor and people raised some sort of objection so I just stuck with this.

Amendment to replace the entire bill with a new text that reads:

"The federal government shall not be permitted to ask any citizen for their race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation on any official government form."

If anyone doesn't think the wording is official enough feel free to offer a change

I would be inclined to support DWTL's amendment. I am getting tired of all of this labeling stuff. It is getting out of hand, really.

I would support such an amendment as friendly and if that were to come about then it would also need a new title.

The attempt to table has failed.

Vote count:

Aye 3 (Lewis, Sensei, Bacon)
Bay 4 (Torie, Dwtl, PiT, Happy)
did not vote 3 (Andrew, Jas, Al)

Amendment to replace the entire bill with a new text that reads:

"The federal government shall not be permitted to ask any citizen for their race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation on any official government form."

I would support such an amendment as friendly and if that were to come about then it would also need a new title.

Senators have 24 hours to object.

Offer another amendment as friendly to change the title to the bill to:
"Race Should Not Matter Act"

Senators haven't been using such time.

I have another friendly amendment to change the title:

"Race Should Not Matter, and the Fact that it Does Shouldn't Matter Either Act".

You are, like, you know, aware that you're not ruling out sillee things like checking down race on police reports or birth certificates (issued by regions anyhow) but rather on the Census? Also trying to outlaw AA again through the backdoor?

Thank you for listening.

As the amendment wasn't accepted as friendly, the vote is now on the amendment. Please vote aye, nay or abstain.

Aye.
