Caroline Kennedy in 2016?
«
on:
December 05, 2008, 11:11:34 pm »
Dig this up in eight years, at which point I'll sound prescient or completely ridiculous.
I'm not betting on this...
BUT
...
IF
Caroline Kennedy replaces Hillary Clinton in the Senate and wins reelection in 2010 and 2012, she could be well-placed to run for president herself in 2016 as the daughter of a former president, a U.S. senator, and a close ally of the possible incumbent (Obama, if he wins a second term). Nor would she be too old.
For that matter, if Hillary is replaced by Rep. Kirsten Gilibrand (another reputed short-lister), she too would be a very possible prospect for president or vice president in 2016.

If Paterson appoints her to replace Hillary, he will have officially lost my vote for 2010.

He might feel pressured into doing so by forces beyond his control, but yeah I would be pretty disappointed.

Reagan doesn't get nearly as much praise/attention as the beloved Kennedy clan does and he actually deserves most of the praise that he gets.

Guys, chill out.
She hasn't shown the kind of passion for ambitious political ascension that would be required for the presidency. If she wanted a Representative spot, it'd probably be hers. She's shown interest in the senate, but that's just because it'd be super easy. She doesn't have the heart for a presidential run.
I mean, she's not the odds-favorite to even be appointed to the senate! I mean, she could get the slot, but it would be a big, big surprise and would be the NY Gov basically surrendering the choice to Obama.
I mean, she's a potential rising star, but her personality thus far has shown that this is not THAT likely. I suspect she would be content with the senate and not seek higher office. She's also too liberal for mainstream America (and almost too liberal for New York but not quite because of her last name).
Anyway, this is an interesting scenario, but she's probably not going to be chosen and if she is (which is possible) she's probably not going to run for president in 2016.

The mere fact that you feel it appropriate to use the qualifier "probably" is what scares me.
I'm not trying to start a "Stop Caroline" movement here, I'm just saying it's amazing that the scenario presented is
at all
plausible.

Truthfully Reagan was at best a mediocre president, he can't compare to the likes of Teddy, FDR, Lincoln, Jefferson or Washington. I think that just because we have had a run of not so great presidents has made him stand out as one of the ones who screwed up the least. If Clinton had just minded his own personal business he would definately have been seen in a better light by the American people than Ronald Reagan.

Saying that Kennedy would be a viable Presidential candidate when she isn't even in office yet is stretching it. However, I do think there is a fairly good chance she will be chosen to fill Hillary's seat. Let's look at her performance in office before we jump to conclusions. Even if she does well, we have no idea if she has the relentless fire in the belly and bone-grinding dedication necessary to run for President. Very few people do and given how private she has been it seems unlikely.

Er... no thank you. Let's not reward people for their names. It's already pretty gross that she's going to get a Senate seat without having done anything to earn it.

If Kennedy is appointed, I will be endorsing Republicans for statewide races in NY in 2010.
