Well who would've ever predicted that the first Indian governor and first Vietnamese Congressman would be from Louisiana?

I thought Louisiana was supposed to be a rascist state cause McCain's numbers were an improvemnet from Bush's when the nationwide trend went the opposite way.

Who would have thought that Louisiana would have one of the best election results pages in the country?

To cross-reference the SoS results, the exact pre-Katrina location of New Orleans precinct polling places are available here.

So Cao is the Michael Patrick Flanagan or Nick Lampson of 2008.

Did Giuliani and Palin belittle him for being a community organizer?

Fun fact: I'm from California-15 (here at Tulane for college), so I'm one of probably 10 Americans (outside Hawaii) who has not one, but two Asian-Americans representing him in Congress.

I knew nothing about this race. Today was when I finalized realized who that Rahim guy was (from Lewis' signature) and that he was running here. I didn't even bother to know anything about the Republican candidate (and this goes for the results in the other district as well). I checked up a bit on the two guys in the other race today.

When I signed on here a few minutes ago, I saw something about the first person of Vietnamese descent serving in Congress. I thought to myself, "Wait a minute...Fleming and Carmouche aren't Vietnamese..."

Oddly enough I might have actually voted for the Republican in this case. It helps that he is Asian, but is he quite moderate and we need more of those Republicans in Congress. And, he won't be there long unless somehow Jefferson is renominated. At least this shows that Democrats and liberals are more willing to vote based on ethics than partisan lines... (a.k.a. Alaska and Don Young).

Change in general is good, we need as little corruption as possible in a time like this.

Personally, I'd have expected a black who was educated at a Muslim elementary school in Indonesia to be elected President before this could happen. ;-)

Actually, what happened in Louisiana in CD 2 today ranks up there as among the most unlikely results you will encounter in American politics.  Kind of like Rhode Island electing two Republicans to Congress in 1994.  It really took a unique alignment of the stars for this to happen: an indicted Congressman, a delayed general election due to Hurricane Gustav, and an apparently well-qualified Republican opponent.  I doubt we will see the likes of this election result for some time to come.

I hope this and TN Congressional Dem. primary earlier in the year help to prove that blacks don't always automatically vote for someone because they're black too.

Nonpartisan me:  I support this on the basis that I hate most non-Asian Louisianan (read: corrupt) politicians .

Partisan version of me that doesn't exist: I hate this because it helps the GOP expand themselves as a nonwhite party and makes our dominance less certain over the next few years.

Why are Asian Republicans so electable in Louisiana btw?

Cool. I will enjoy us taking this seat back in 2010 without a corrupt Democrat.

And honestly Cao is a lot better of a legislator, no?

Even knowing nothing about him.

The 15th? Cool. I'm there.

Sad

I wanted Rahim to win (yes, I know).

Don't forget Steele and Blackwell. There are plenty of examples of this phenomenon.

Louisiana never fails to amaze me.  "Anh Quang Cao (R)" just beat an establishment corrupt New Orleans African-American politician.

I like how Cao's background is remarkably similar to Obama's... looks like LA is where the Republicans are manufacturing their bootleg young minority political stars.

Still.  With the highest respect of "Anh Quang Cao (R)" and the belief he'll do better than anyone the Democrats elect from here, how is this not a 2 year term?

He's also similar to Jindal.  Both well educated with scientific degrees, both zealous Catholics, both won against a candidate blamed for corruption or incompetence.
