I just expect generic New Orleans AA (D) to defeat him in two years.

Although I hope not (assuming Cao is clean).

Looking at the "Issues" section on Cao's website, he doesn't sound rabidly conservative. It's mostly a focus on local New Orleans issues like hurricane recovery, revitalization of the Port, public safety, and, of course, Jefferson's corruption. Not very much typical Republican jargon to be found.

Still, I'd be pretty surprised if he switched. Then again, this is Louisiana.

I'll be very curious to see how he votes.

Considering the area he has just been elected in, a party switch to (I) would probably help him more than staying an (R).

Wikipedia doesn't have a pic.  But here he is, first result in Google image search for his assumed name Joseph (not Anh):

I wish him the best of luck in New Orleans politics.  I hope Louisiana will continue to surprise me and reelects him since he seems like something far better than the local Democratic party can produce.

Someone should buy him a smaller tie.

I'm glad New Orleans finally got rid of Jefferson, and if that means we have to have a Republican in there for two years so be it. I just hope Jefferson doesn't try to win his seat back in 2010.

Man, I'm cool if Cao holds the seat forever.

One vote in the House isn't worth having Rep. Calpone

I'd also like to note how very pleased I am that the Republicans on this board and on the blogs aren't trying to make this into a "Democrats in peril" story.

Well, the spin machine starts at 9 am EST.

If the RNC spun Chambliss's victory as such, and had stories spun against them in the pre-November special elections, when one after another, GOP districts were picked off, I don't expect the leadership to keep quiet about this.

Anyway, as a faux-Democrat or whatever, I rooted for Cao and am glad he won.

But really, the entire state of Louisiana could go to hell.  It's the most corrupt state south of Canada.

I went to bed half-convinced that Jefferson was about to rig his way out of trouble, so it's nice to see that that's not happend.

In a funny way there's something not so surprising about this; we should have seen it coming actually, but I suppose we just resigned ourselves to the outcome no one actually wanted because anything else seemed strange. What I'm getting at; we all forgot how Dollar Bill got re-elected last time. He only won because people in Jefferson parish were not prepared to vote for someone as "liberal" as Carter; the hatred for him in certain parts of Nawlins was never going to go away. Thus a candidate able to beat him in Jefferson while not scaring people in the blacker parts of Nawlins was always going to be able to give him, at the very least, a scare.

As a partisan Democrat, I'm glad Cao won. I don't like corrupt scumbags of any party.

It's really quite hilarious that people are even suggesting Cao could survive in the seat in 2010. He couldn't, not even if he switched to the Democrats, and certainly not as a Republican or Independent. (Well, okay, he might survive a Democratic primary if the black and white votes both split. But this is really just an opportunity for every New Orleans politician ever to try to break into the House.) People seem to have forgotten that this district is D+28 and 60% black. Even Chet Edwards only represents an R+18 district.

But, of course, his victory is very good news.

Actually, this is excellent news for Dems

*one vote won't make any difference in the congress

*got rid of a party eyesore

*the seat will easily be won back in two years

Doubt Pelosi was in the least sorry to see this guy gone.

Well, I've gotta say I'm pretty excited here. I'm glad I predicted this one wrong.

Fun fact: I'm from California-15 (here at Tulane for college), so I'm one of probably 10 Americans (outside Hawaii) who has not one, but two Asian-Americans representing him in Congress.

Awesome, I'm at Tulane as well- and I also agree with you about Cedric Richmond. Did you see the dem primary debate here on campus?

I wonder how upset and sad WalterMitty is now.

I also realized Cao will be a way better rep for what New Orleans needs. It obviously needs tons of funding to revitalization, and you don't get that with a rep under a cloud. Cao will work better with the Democrats in rebuilding it than the disowned pariah Jefferson.

I did.  Are you in College Dems too?

Richmond was definitely the most impressive of that batch.  I hope and believe he'll be the nominee here in 2010.  But in this city, we'll probably pick Ray Nagin...

If Cao is smart he'll switch parties now. Tongue

That pretty much guarantees he'd get knocked off in the primary.

The 15th? Cool. I'm there.

Sad

I wanted Rahim to win (yes, I know).

Cool.  Which part?  I'm from the non-rich part of Los Gatos.

I was tempted to go third party.  I didn't think Cao would even break 30%, but decided just in case to vote for someone I knew about.  I wish Cao the best, but know he's not going to be in the House that long.  Still, he seems to be an impressive guy, and may have a political future outside of the House.
