Exarchia is a solidly left-wing area. The current ND government is unpopular and scandal-ridden. It trails the equally-disgusting PASOK in polls and will likely lose the EU elections next year.

If Greece had a more strictly proportional system of proportional representation, the right (who're currently governing) would have last been in power in the 80s.

Looks like the boy did not have a bomb but was simply insulting the police...

Apparently ND just passed a new electoral law that's even worse. Instead of around 42% for a majority, you just need around 39%.

The malapportionment of that is Italian in measure.

Still better than some of the old Greek electoral laws.

Synaspismos-PASOK passed a real PR law in 1989, but that led to three elections in less than a year.

The idea is to keep the leftists in Parliament and thus viable and thus keep them from voting for the PASOK.

Wasn't the purpose of the election system in Greece to ensure that the biggest party could rule without a coalition.

That too.

In other news, all trade unions have called for a general strike tomorrow. As Greek governments usually do, the government will hang on to power.

Athens airport is currently closed because of an air traffic controller strike.

Tear gas shouldn't cause any of these symptoms. And I believe they would be somewhat familiar with it...
In any case, tear gas certainly doesn't have a shelf life of 27 years. Another sign of how undefunded the Greek police is.

Don't worry, they'll be out of that old tear gas soon if the asshats keep it up.  Any ideas what the police should use next to keep them at bay?

Mass Suicide would be a sensible option.

Of course!  That would solve all of the problems in Greece!  They should have thought of that sooner.

No, all problems in Greece (and in all other Balkan countries) would be solved if all politicians commited suicide.

One must understand that the Greek government can't risk any more deaths.

Not all of them, but certainly it might lead to the first expression of trust into a Greek policeman since the Balkan Wars. That would be a historic achievement.

December 20 poll, so during the riots:

PASOK 30%
ND 22.3%
KKE 10.6%
SYRIZA 10.3%
LAOS 5.1%

The smaller more extreme parties are benefiting the most, it seems.
