I created a map of counties switching paties. Orange counties are Democratic gains and pale blue are Republican gains.

I guess I didn't expect the Red River valley to switch so much... nor so much of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. California also shifted a great deal, but that seemed more localized. And compared to Kerry, Obama really lost very few counties.

As a democrat one thing that scares me is the shift in the "coal counties" aka southwest wva. Then again, I agree with the theory that they are "skeptic" voters, who weren't ready to vote for a liberal black guy from Chicago, but might vote for him if things are going well in 2012.

Why? WV has 5 electoral votes. Worry about places where people actually live.

Wyoming County, PA didn't switch. There was an error in the SoS's results, apparently.

Wow. McCain only grabbed counties in Appalachia.

Either your eyesight is poor or your knowledge of basic geography of your own country is somewhat lacking.

I was talking about counties that flipped, which I thought was understood since that is what this whole thread is about. Sorry sir.

Please note that Arkansas and Louisiana are pretty far from the Appalachian Mountains, and not contained in, say, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Appalachian_region_of_United_States.gif

Basic geography it is, then.

Probably eyesight for Louisiana, basic geography for Arkansas and West Tennessee.
