Let's do something completely illogical and pointless!

Keep in mind that's a plurality vote, not a majority.

Yeah.

It's pretty much impossible to determine how Protestant blacks would vote though.

I would treat at least those in "normal" churches (mainline or fundie) like White Protestants. The others... I dunno.

Dark green: Sinn Féin (Quasi-terrorist republicans, left-wing, don't take their seats in Westminster)
Light green: SDLP (Moderate republican socialists)
Blue: UUP (Moderate conservative unionists)
Brown: DUP (Fascist anti-Catholic unionist extremists)
Yellow: Alliance (Stupid liberal party; similar to the CUP of 1860 here in the US)

Yellow: Alliance (Stupid liberal party; similar to the CUP of 1860 here in the US)

Stupid? The only totally reasonable party is more like it. I'd take them over any of the other five or any of the other assorted nutters that make up their minor parties.

Stupid insofar as they have no position on the issue that matters.

They'd be dead wrong. I love the Lord of the Triple Mandates.

Probably a good thing, that keeps them sane.

If you did the US with Canadian parties, would you give Louisiana to the Bloc Quebecois?

One would hope that the Bloc Conféderé would be able to win more than just one state.

An explanation for those of us who know nothing about N. Irish political parties would be cool. Tongue

Sinn Féin: Republicans (not the American kind, obviously). Political wing of the now defunct Provisional IRA. Left-wing, nominally socialist, but ultimately willing to compromise on most near anything to gain power or progress unification or generally increase cross-border links. (26% of the vote in the last NI Assembly elections.) Although they win seats in the Westminster parliament, they refuse to take them as they consider it a foreign parliament.

SDLP: The Social and Democratic Labour Party. Moderate nationalist. Left-leaning. Strong ties to all major southern Irish parties and to Labour in Britain. (15%)

Alliance: Strongly anti-sectarian, soft-liberal. Officially neutral on the question of NI's ultimate status, but arguably defaultly unionist. Against the system of effectively forced power sharing that exists at present. (5%)

UUP: Ulster Unionist Party. Moderate unionists. Strong ties to the British Conservative Party. Middle-class conservatives. (15%)

DUP: Democratic Unionist Party. Unionist, conservative-very conservative. Until recently the naysayer party and electoral vehicle of Ian Paisley. Since accepting power-sharing and SF's role within it and the retirement of Paisley, it's difficult to say with certainty what their future holds ideologically. Strong links with Paisley's own church, the Free Presbyterians - probably as close a thing as exists to American evangelicalism in Ireland. (30%)

Might also note:
Greens: Environmentalist, soft left. Made their electoral breakthrough in last year's Assembly elections winning their first seat. The NI greens operate as a region of the Irish Greens, but have links with British counterparts. (2%)

PUP: Progressive Unionist Party. The only other party with an Assembly seat. Loyalist, politically linked with the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force. Leftist. Unlikely to have any substantive electoral future.(<1%)

TUV: Traditional Unionist Voice. Hard-line unionist, anti-power sharing with SF. Established late last year by ex-DUP members who considered the DUP's entering into government with SF to be unacceptable. Electorally untested, but it should be clearer with the European elections next year what future, if any, they have.

As to the map, interesting but impossible to say much with any real certainty.

I'd have to ally with Sinn Féin I'd imagine. Due mostly to family history and interest in my own survival.

I find it interesting that there's a (tiny) left-wing unionist party, but no right-wing nationalist party.
