Gordon Smith cost him his seat. It's a shame. I used to really like the guy. However, he felt the need to do some extreme pandering to the left and that did him in. Absolutely foolish.

He took too long to realize that he needed to be a different senator if he wanted to represent Oregon.

no.  people who voted for Brownlow did so because Smith had alienated them with all of his "OMG TED KENNEDY!! Blue heart" ads.  they would have stayed home otherwise
