Mine is quite easy: That Jesse Ventura is still anything remotely resembling anything close to popular in Minnesota.

I think 538's analysis of my state was probably the quintessential horrible analysis of Washington I've read.

That Washington has a large number of moderate republicans. Basically Reichert is the only major one, the rest are actually quite out there. Remember Washington state has voted for Ron Paul, Bush, and Buchanan in its primaries (when I say Ron Paul it is because he most likely would have won the state in the caucus in February if the state party hadn't stopped voting at a point when McCain was leading). Oh and it was a four way race here if you remember, with McCain, Paul, Romney and Huckabee all getting simular support (so basically three versus one moderate).

WA GOP example: Pam Roach.

Oh and also that Washington is a utopia; in reality we are still a few years from achieving that.

Where do I start?  "Misconception" is synonymous with "a thought about New Jersey".

Ditto for Texas.

Loggers with missing teeth fighting hippies in trees with missing teeth....

OK--- reality is Oregon is heavily dependent on international exports, of which only a small fraction is currently timber. Over 50% of the state now lives in metro-Portland and high-tech has been a greater chunk of the state economy than timber since 1980.

The main pet-peeve on this board, is the idea that Oregon is somehow a "swing state" at the Presidential level when it hasn't gone Republican since 1984!

The view of white California liberals that California's progressiveness is filled with people like themselves rather than a Democratic coalition of minorities.  Thus all of the "surprise" that posting up fliers in Berkeley campus buildings against prop 8 or waving a sign in front of my precinct wasn't enough to defeat Prop 8...instead of, you know, talking to people who don't already agree with you.

The view of many that Republicans in CA are an anemic political force.  Outnumbered, yes, but they got lots of money and pragmatism.

That Minnesota is trending Republican or is somehow conservative because it's not on the coast.

That's up there as well. Another was the idea that Palin was particularly popular here because she came from another cold and snowy state or something ridiculous and illogical like that.

Michael Barone said Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington are part of something called the "Frozen North," and McCain's selection of Palin gave him a strong chance to carry them. lol!

Us in Alaska don't care about the environment.

Just because we want to develop the state's resources and don't want to evict everyone from their homes and turn the state into a national park, doesn't mean we don't care.

Hell, that's why Alaska wanted to become a state in the first place. Our resources were being plundered my lower 48 companies. And because we were only a territory, we had no recourse.

I agree.  I think you'll find a lot of conservationists in states like Alaska and Montana.

But when you're talking about billions of dollars in oil, that conservationist attitude wilts a little.  Also, I think that the less you know about what it means to drill in ANWR, the more you oppose it.  And Alaskans realize that very little is up there, and resent the fact that the federal government controls such a profitable, low-harm, economic venture and refuses to pass the ball.

BUT, I have a lot of negative political attitudes about your state from Stevens near reelection, among other things... Smiley

They're the people who voted for Nader in 2000.

They are heavily outnumbered.

Whoah, conservationist doesn't necessarily mean liberal.  You can be a gun-toting, biblethumpin' fellow who also opposes deforestation.

There are so many choices. The one I already harped on all year was that Massachusetts voting habits are more racist than elsewhere in the northeast, which is laughably false.

I'll stick with this one: that Massachusetts has crazy high taxes that have driven all the businesses out of the state. It's not a political misconception of the first order, but it is of the second order.

It's actually the all-important Guatemalan vote, but don't tell anyone.
