HC. The Swedes I grew up around were quite annoying about their ancestry.

A great country and the politics are unusually good, too.

They'd rank much higher in my book if economic leftists didn't use it as a the perfect example of a socialist utopia.  (granted nowhere near as much as they use to)  I'm glad it's worked so (seemingly) well there, good for the Swedes.  That doesn't mean it would work everywhere though or that it will work for them over the long haul (or if they had to provide their own defense from '45-'91).

I do like Sweden and Swedes though.

Who was going to attack Sweden?

Come on man.  The same country that invaded several other Euro nations post '45 and kept half the continent on lock down.

The only countries attacked by the Soviet Union after 1945 and were already communist. Sweden was a neutral country and there were no benefits to attacking them, only drawbacks. Plus they had no common border with the Soviet Union.

Did Sweden not have fairly substantial military capacity (given it's size) for most of the post-war period?

The Swedes certainly thought there was a threat.  From wiki:

Still does. Indigenously develop their fighters, like the current Saab Gripen.

One has to remember that the fastest route to Norway and the UK for a Soviet bomber is across Sweden.

That's all the defense Sweden is going to get?  I guess it really isn't the socialist utopia it use to be.

That's not what I've been hearing from socialist fundies for the past 20...25 years.  Again, granted, I don't hear it anywhere near as much as I use to and socialist fundies tend to think they are a lot smarter than they actually are so I should take what they say with a grain of salt.

Ah, that's an interesting discussion.

To clear things up:

1. As Jas says, Sweden did have an unusually strong military for a country of its size during the post-WWII era.

2. It was still obviously impossible for Sweden to defend itself against the Soviet Union on its own.

3. Sweden's entire defence structure was entirely focused on defending against a Soviet attack, and there were secret deals with NATO which made Sweden practically a part of it. In official rethoric, Sweden was often quite anti-US, of course. But that was just talk.

4. Part of the reason Sweden didn't join NATO was actually to help Finland, which was under heavy pressure from the USSR and might have been squeezed between the blocs if forced to stand on their own.

5. The threat of invasion was very, very real. The USSR even forced the Finns to build a large road through Finland from the Soviet border to the Swedish which they could use for the invading force...Sweden has strategic significance since Norway is impossible to take from the seaside*, but much easier from inland, and if you control Norway you can threaten the UK rather efficiently.

6. All of the pro-Western, anti-Communist stuff the Social Democrats did during the post-war era eventually came out of course and created a lot of scandals.

*Don't bring up WWII...that kind of stupidity doesn't happen twice.
