Oklahoma Lt. Governor Jari Askins (D) who was elected to the post in 2006 is interested in seeking the Governor's post to replace Governor Brad Henry (D) who is term-limited.

Other candidates include Atty Gen. Drew Edmonson (D), State Treasurer Scott Meacham (D).

On the Republican side, US Reps Tom Cole (OK-4) and Mary Fallin (OK-5) have expressed interest in the seat.

Why do I get the feeling there will be a downballot bloodbath with the Republicans picking up all these open statewide elected posts?

Doubtful.  The state Democratic Party is still quite strong, despite losing federally.  Brad Henry is still immensely popular going into his 7th year as Governor and barring any major screw up should remain so, and that would tremendously help Lt Gov Askins case.  Not to mention, she is quite popular in her own right entering her 3rd year as Lt Governor.  That should create a nice coattail effect on the other downballot races in the same form it did in 2006.  Remember, in 2006, Brad Henry crushed Republican opponent Ernest Istook and the Democrats practically took over nearly every state wide office.  The only reason why the Republicans have more now is because of corruption on the part of a few shamed Democrats.  Plus, McCain produced a nice coattail effect himself in Oklahoma in 2008 despite being crushed by the Obama train nationally.  The Democrats basically have control of the state-wide offices, although the Republicans have seized control of the Senate and the House, something thats been slowly happening over the past six years or so.  I look for the Democrats to at least hold the Republicans lead at bay in 2010, and could possibly pick up some seats.

Well, half of the statewide offices were won by Democrats with 50-52% margins in '06. And the Republicans have steadily gained ground in the legislature.

The only Republican I had heard rumors about was Mary Fallin and she spoke at the 2008 RNC. If Tom Cole is considering I hope he doesn't run. He ran the NRCC piss poorly.

In fact, we've only had about 3 or 4 Republican Governors in our 101 year history.
