Why is Colorado so gosh darned progressive in its diversity?

I just saw a news story today that Colorado is the first state in United States history to have both of its legislative houses to be led by African-Americans:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/07/colorado.legislature/index.html

In addition, Colorado just elected the first openly gay freshman to Congress this election cycle, instead of electing someone apparently straight and then reelecting them after they came out.

Colorado's last four elected Senators have been Mexican-American, Two Mormons (2% of the state's population), and a Native-American (Remember Ben Nighthorse Campbell?).

Mormons are hardly an under-represented minority, they're 2% of the population with 6 Senators.

You mean Congressmen or State Senators?

I don't think anyone in Colorado appears to be underrepresented.

Both of their last governors have been white Catholics too.  Overall Catholics are 20% of the population but that's probably influenced strongly by the Hispanic population.

Are there no WASPs in Colorado?

2% of the population of the United States with 6 United States Senators. Not to mention Mitt Romney.

But why can't they elect a heterosexual WASP?

Mormons are hardly an under-represented minority, they're 2% of the population with 6 Senators.

Ah, I see.  They're also 2% of Colorado's population so I got confused

but my point is that isn't it almost freakishly so?  Really, Colorado breaking African-American landmarks requiring multiple black leaders ascending into power simultaneously?  Isn't that a bit weird?

Is it white guilt?  Is it toleration?  Promotion of minorities relative to their unfair status in other states?  Or a simple free market where the best climb to the top and they always end up being non-WASP out of random chance?

Probably the latter.  Colorado is a colorblind state.
