The Missouri, Florida, and (presumed) Ohio Senate primaries are a good opportunity for the Club for Growth to influence a multi-candidate primary. Who might they support in those states? Do they have favored individuals already? Who fits the profile?

This is intended as a serious thread. No rehashes of old battles.

What is the attraction for going for a retread like Talent?  He's not going to win. He was eaten alive over the stem cell research issue. That is why he lost, and why in part (beyond his phlegmatic personality), he would lose again.

I don't see any moderate-conservative battles brewing in the GOP ranks at the moment except what's going down in Pennsylvania.  They might endorse a few inevitable candidates (the one who will get the nomination, I mean).  Portman, with economic experience and focus, might be a particular interest.

I expect them to be interested in opposing Boxer.

Does the CFG get involved in governor's races?  They might like Whitman

He barely lost in a bad year. Give the GOP a "normal" midterm environment and he'd win the seat back.

But it's not like Robin Carnahan is in the same lightyear as Claire McCaskill, who was just a state auditor and hardly a political heavyweight

McCaskill had a good year that Carnahan (under normal circumstances) won't have.  Wink

I know, but you can't exactly just pretend like they're equals!  This year's Carnahan could have beaten last year's Talent under a worse environment!!!  I don't know if Talent has gained in popularity any, but I'm sure that would be counteracted by the fact that the seat will be open this time instead of Talent being the incumbent.

I think these direct comparisons are ridiculoso

Talent is 1 out of 3 for statewide races, and 0 out of 3 for getting over 50% in statewide races. He is not some heavyweight superstar candidate.

He doesn't have to be a superstar. All of his races were within three points.

And I'm sorry but this Robin Carnahan seems awfully overrated. She won her 2004 statewide race by five points. Ok, that's good especially given the year. She won this year with 62% and received the most votes in state history. That's impressive and all but it's a race for Secretary of State, guys. A U.S. Senate race is a whole different monster. Let's wait before we basically crown her the Senator.

Just as I wanted.

CFG will probably not be involved in many primaries in a serious way. In most cases there prefered candidate will be the nominee or it does not matter cause the general will be uncompetitive.
