I still don't see how you can presume something national if the perfect GOP candidate for the state wins in an off-year election.  It seems awfully, awfully cocky to read anything into how New Jersey goes either way and I, for one, will not fall into that trap.  I mean, it's a Democratic state, but so are Rhode Island, Connecticut, & Vermont, but they all have Republican governors.

I agree... I have ties to N.J. and everyone I know is sick of the high taxes and the corruption.

They've always said that. It's part of being a resident of the Garden State - complain, complain, complain...and then re-elect their elected officials.  Tongue

Poll out today by FDU.  Showed Corzine leading Christie by 7%, but with high unknowns this isn't the info to be taken.  Corzine's approval was 5% higher than those who would vote for him, which in New Jersey is awful.  Corzine also leads Lonegan by about 20 and Merkt by about 25 (although Christie not winning the nod is almost impossible)

Primary Prediction:
Christie 75%
Lonegan 20%
Merkt 3%
Others 2%

Latest FDU poll:

Corzine vs. Christie: 40-33
Corzine vs. Lonegan: 46-28
Corzine vs. Merkt: 43-23

Favorable Ratings:

Corzine: 42% favorable, 44% unfavorable

The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll of 831 registered voters statewide was conducted by telephone from Jan. 2, 2009 through Jan. 7, 2009, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points.  Samples for some questions, as noted in tables, are smaller.

42% approval for Corzine? Ok, well, that's proof by NJ standards that he's safe as long as he's a Democrat. Seriously.

This poll is too premature with way too many undecideds.  The winner of this race will basically have to do it from scratch.

Christie is beating Corzine by 2:1 among Independents. The good thing about NJ is that it's so Democratic that Corzine needs only 35% of Independents to win the race overall.

This is the first competent Republican since 2001, and arguably 2000

I think this pretty much tells us everything we need to know.  There's no way Corzine will lose the elections.  Christie sounds like a decent guy, having done things that Republicans never do (such as enforcing environmental protection laws), but he simply doesn't have a chance.  We'll see though.

Schundler was competent, he just wasn't electable.  Franks also ran in that primary

Here's a question I don't know that anyone's asked lately: Is Corzine still filthy rich?

I mean, I know the old line, but stocks have taken a hit lately...ESPECIALLY financial stocks.  I don't doubt that he could still spend what it takes, but does he have enough in reserve to want to?  Fifty million is a lot of money.

Doug Forrester was plenty competent too, just a terrible candidate.

If you want to talk COMPETENT, the most competent candidate in this GOP Primary is Merkt, hands down.  He'll never win, but no one knows their stuff better.

I think another good question is the public's perception in New Jersey that the state needs to be cleaned up by a clean lawyer.  Obviously in the 90's, crime issues were key industries for the GOP political machine, and I suspect that they may still be alive in New Jersey.

I attempted to look up his net worth but I got nothing.  He spent 40 million four years ago, I can't imagine he's lost more than 10-20% of his wealth, meaning he'll have plenty to spend.

If Corzine is serious about being reelected, it's hard for me to imagine him not outspending Christie significantly.

I have a feeling this race will turn into one of those where no one on the forum (spare Conan) is supporting Corzine.  In fact, 99% of people with an IQ above 30 would not if not for blind partisanship

I already said that Corzine will win and I stick to my call, for now.

I just note, in passing, that every so often New Jersey has a *little* rebellion to hand the reins of its government from one corrupt governing establishment to another corrupt governing establishment.  I don't think it's that year, but my certainty level is not 100%.

So you support a bland, liberal, arguably corrupt governor versus a man who fits your ideology almost perfectly?
