Go figure...

(Hawaii belongs to that blue region at the Pacific coast and Alaska belongs to the red region east of the Pacific Coast.)

Blue: Roicky Mountain Union. Poor, isolated and decaying.

Dark Blue: United States of America. A poor, decaying mostly agricultural country. Slavery reinstated, gays banned from most professions, etc.

Dark Green: Alaska, a decaying petrol state with open slavery

Dark Red: Republic of New England. Rich, prosperous and free.

Green: Part of Mexico once again. Mexico's politics are moved to the libertarian right compared to now, and the nation gets a quebec-style situation due to it's northern anglophone minority/

Grey: Deseret. Backwards, poor and theocratic.

Light Blue: Confederate States of America.

Light Green: Hawai'i, massively wealthy off of it's strategic location. Has a Dubai-level per capita income

Pink: Great Lakes Union. Looks like post-1989 eastern Europe.

Red: Pacifica. New England-lite.

I think that's worse than the one in the OP.  Amazing.

In grey, the famous "disputed lands"...

- The Sustainable Republic of New America, aka "Hopeland" (San Francisco), led by a the Superior College of the Republic, with 9 members (Christine Gregoire, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Gavin Newsom, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Richardson, Brian Schweitzer, Mark Udall, later joined by Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin)

- Upper America, aka "Utopia" (Milwaukee), led by President Russ Feingold (no VP, but a Prime minister: Michelle Obama)

- The United States of Inner America (USIA), aka "Rustland" (Cincinnati), led by a dual and non-elected Consulate, Evan Bayh and Mitch Daniels, after a military coup failed

- The United States of America (USA), aka "Old America" (Washington, but Boston temporarily, waiting for VA and PA cases be solved), led by President Hillary Clinton (VP: David Petraeus)

- The Confederate States of America (CSA), aka "Dixieland" (Dallas and Atlanta alternate each year as capital), led by President Mike Huckabee (VP: Mark Sanford)

- The Free State of Alaska, aka "Saraland" (Juneau), led by a Princess Sara Palin of Wasilla

- Florida, aka "the Peninsula" (Miami), led by President Charlie Crist (VP: Bill Nelson), elected only by inhabitants over 45 years old

But the most interesting part is the period called by historians as "the era of the disputed lands", former states disputed between:

- Hopeland and Utopia: the Plains (Dakotas and Nebraska). After undecisive referendums (not enough turnout, not qualified majorities,...), finally, a joint condominium is established, which lets Hopeland in charge of foreign affairs, defence, police, justice and law-making, but which grants economic advantages to Utopia and a veto on social, environment, farming, economic matters.
Hopeland first crushed quickly various rebellions in Wyoming and Utah, but was forced to let a Mormon governorship gain a large autonomy.

- Utopia and Dixieland: Missouri. After a short and little war, Utopia let Dixieland take control of Missouri, with the only condition that people who disagree can leave freely and establish themselves in Utopia.

- Dixieland and Old America: Virginia. A fierce war is won by Old America, supported by a larger part than expected of the Virginians who turn against the Dixie troops. The new border remains disputed.
Dixieland was also forced to withdraw some troops to tighten the control of the Spanish-speaking areas in Texas, which want to join Hopeland.

- Rustland and Old America: Pennsylvania. After plans to dismember PA, Rustland agrees to let Pennsylvania join the Old Amercia, provided Old America send troops to defend Western Michigan against Utopia's secret attempts to grasp this territory and to police the southern and mountainous Kentucky against some irredentist "Rebs".

The capitals should be Juneau, Sacramento, St. Louis, Tallahassee, Denver and New York City, I think.

Blue: The Pacific Union
President: Janet Napolitano (Progressive Party)
Parties: Progressive Party (A socially and Economically liberal party, but allows moderates), New Liberal Party (Socially moderate and economically conservative), Green Party (Mainly an urban party of left-wingers)
Capital: Lake Tahoe (A federal district would encompass the area)
Disputes: Early on had a dispute with the Confederacy over Eastern border, specifically concerning areas of Texas wanting to join the Pacific Union. Eventually after a minor ground war a deal is reached (The Pacific Union purchases the new area from the Confederacy) and the Pacific annexes the Hispanic-majority sections of Texas and incorporates the new territory as the state of Rio Grande.
Note: I am assuming that Canada in this situation would also have troubles and as such the Pacific Union includes British Columbia and the Yukon Territory.

Grey: The Great Plains Republic
President: Sam Brownback
Parties: New Democrat Party (Much like ours today except a step or two to the right on almost every issue), Conservative Party (Socially and Economically conservative)
Capital: Wichita
Disputes: Involved in the Great Missouri War (more to be said later on), ended up acquiring most of Western and Central Missouri, including Kansas City (roughly 55% of current state).

Green: Union of the Great Lakes
President: Russ Feingold
Parties: Liberal Party (Left-leaning party), Center Party (A moderate party), National Coalition (Three or so right-leaning parties of various degrees that work together in elections and overtime simply form one party, ranges from very conservative and religious to Rockefeller Republicans)
Capital: Chicago
Disputes: Involved in the Great Missouri War (more to be said later on), ended up acquiring lands neighboring it in Missouri and St. Louis though total land area from original state at only around 15%.

Red: Confederate States of America
President: Sonny Perdue
Parties: Conservative Party (Socially conservative and economically liberal), National Party (Religious and very conservative), Labor Party (party of the minorities and liberals)
Capital: Atlanta
Disputes: Involved in the Great Missouri War (more to be said later on), ended up acquiring the Ozarks region of Missouri in the south (roughly 30% of the current state), though no major population centers.
-Fought briefly with the Pacific Union over hispanic areas of Texas, ultimately ceded areas along the Rio Grande
-Took all but the Northern 1/3 of Kentucky and the southwestern and central-southern areas of Virginia in agreement with negotiations with the Union of the Great Lakes and the United States of North America

Blue: United States of North America
President: Hillary Clinton
Parties: Progressive Party (Socially and Economically Liberal), Labor Party (Economically liberal and socially moderate), Social Democratic Party (Further to the left of the Progressives)
Capital: Washington D.C.
Disputes: Took most of Virginia (roughly 2/3 of the state), after negations with the Confederacy

Green: New England
President: Howard Dean
Parties: Same as United States of North America, except that the Labor Party operates under the title "New Democratic Party", and is much less powerful.
Capital: Boston

Gray: Florida
President: Charlie Christ
Parties: Republican, Democrat (same as our current parties, except the republican party is much more moderate, especially on social issues and the democratic party is much more dependent on hispanics)
Capital: Miami

How the disputes unfolded:
Missouri was quickly the most divided state and after a short period of negotiations war quickly broke out. At the beginning it was a free-for-all and the Confederacy seemed to be on its way to victory. After a few defeats the Union of the Great Lakes and the Great Plains Republic agreed to work together against the Confederacy and slowly turned back their forces. During this time negotiations were also going on in reference to Virginia, and the Conferderacy, fearful of another front quickly gave the United States of North America most of their desired territory. After recieving news of mistreatment of minorities in Texas and pleas for help the Pacific decided to intervene and invaded, because of the conflict in Missouri the Confederacy quickly sued for peace and sold the Rio Grande region to the Pacific Union at a small cost (only $5 billion!). Eventually after 2 years of heavy fighting a truce was signed and Missouri was divided up. The borders of Kentucky had been agreed to earlier. The Florida Panhandle was allowed to vote on whether to join the Confederacy or stay in Florida and decided to join up with the Confederacy. Puerto Rico entered into union with Florida after a short time.

Canada: After the collapse of the US Canada too fell apart. It started with Quebec voting for independence and went on from there. BC joined the Pacific Union, Alberta the Great Plains Republic, while the Maritimes established their own republic. Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut retained the name of Canada... but really it was no more.

This thread is very interesting, not least because of the idea that a split of the US would produce alternative political parties to those which exist today. Given the impossible task of breaking the two-party system I am amazed (but pleased) that people are considering new nations will mean new groups.

I don't know. I was actually considering it. I feel like it would be a good fit for something along the lines of a rough federation, something with less federal power perhaps. The Maritimes would surely want to make sure that they would not become dominated by New England.
