Sadly, after several unintentional, non-Obama uses of the phrase ("Can we grab dinner?"  "Yes, we can."), I'm starting to suspect that there is no way to use the phrase in conversation without coming off as a total tool.

Tool (unless it's used to make fun of those who use it of course)

Yes, even when it's unintentional. Thanks, Obama.

totally. I you say yes we can and ppl think you are using it as a tool you know what is on their mind. I have never ran into that problem. That might be cause my friends are dumb.

I keep finding myself saying it in non-Obama contexts and believing that someone will call me a tool, but no one has caught it so my conclusion is yes, we can continue to use that phrase in a non-Obama context.

Actually, that screams "I'm a tool" even more than any other use of it.

No, not really. Although if you think about it, that stands true for all campaign mottos, most just dont get used as much as that one does in regular English.

"Can we grab dinner?"

"Country first!"

I don't think I have ever heard a non-Politician use "Yes We Can" in an Obama related context.

There is an ad here now for some American car company (Chrysler, I think) that uses the Obama graphics and 'Yes, We Can' to advertise ugly cars. It disgusts me.

Here we go:

No, it makes one sound like an assholė. It's not "we", nor is it "our" victory, nor anything else that makes it sound like anything more than a politician won an election.
