Sorry, after Richardson stepped aside, I couldn't resist it.

Romney, regrettably, did not win the Presidency.

At least allow me this one, small fantasy.

It's not too much to ask.  Smiley

The idea was discussed before, but it was not stolen.

It is hardly a unique fantasy scenario.

This thread illustrates why there are no Mormon comedians.

I'd be chill with Romney as Commerce Secretary, I think he'd be great at it (despite the fact that he's a political chameleon) mostly due to the fact that Commerce Secretary involves almost no partisanship.  I mean, how partisan can he be overseeing like our weather management and the census?

But the position has to go to a Hispanic.  The mayors of Miami (Diaz) and Albuquerque (Sanchez) are the frontrunners IMO.  But since the position means nothing, a Hispanic woman would yield Obama the most political capital due to recent criticism.

Replacing Richardson with a non-Hispanic would be a serious miss-step.  And if Romney were to be the Commerce Secretary, such a decision would have been best to do early, not days before he swears on the bible, to divert the left blogosphere outcry over the move.

But I actually don't think Romney for Commerce would be a bad move for either Romney or Obama on-face.  Romney gets to be relevant for another eight years and Obama gets to divert a major kick-dirt-in-the-eyes-style opponent and a more fractured primary in 2012, hopefully resulting in a primary opponent of Palin or some such demographic failure

But Romney is for all intents and purposes a Hispanic: His father is from Mexico, he has lots of children, and he has Guatemalans working on his lawn.

Had to wiki that.  Weird how his father ran for president even though a) He was born in Mexico and b) He was born there because his parents' parents were fleeing polygamous institutions in the US

Never knew that

Lifted directly from Wikipedia.

"It is notable that while Romney was born in Mexico, he was still considered to be a viable and legal candidate to run for office. His Mormon grandfather and his three wives fled to Mexico in 1886, but none of them ever relinquished their citizenship. While the Constitution does provide that a president must be a natural born citizen, the first Congress of the United States in 1790 passed legislation stating: "The children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or outside the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens of the United States." Romney and his family fled Mexico in 1912 prior to the Mexican revolution. However, the Naturalization Act of 1795 repealed the Act of 1790 and removed the language explicitly stating that the children of US citizens are natural-born citizens. As such, it is inconclusive whether Romney was eligible for the office of President."

Very, very interesting.
