I could see Franken maybe hypothetically being on an independent ticket one day. He's got the balls to try it.

Hagan and Begich should be near the very bottom for the simple fact that they are one-termers

As much as everyone here seems to have an irrational hatred of Hagan, she is one of the sharpest politicians in North Carolina which should have been demonstrated this year, and given the sparcity of moderate female senators in the Democrats, she is one of sharpest female politicians in the country now. Add to that a southern accent and swing state background and she is probably on top.

Begich's near loss this year probably hurts him whether fairly or unfairly.

Johanns is probably a potential veep darkhorse but I could never see him at the top of a ticket.

Mark Udall is too liberal, and Tom Udall too unambitious.

Warner is on paper perfect, though he always unperformed in real life. I think though he is a strong potential candidate for 2016.

Shaheen is useless generally.

Al Franken is lucky he ran in this year, and he has cost the party a lot of grief.

Merkley, Risch, are both party hacks who won because of the letter after their names.

Merkley 2016! That would be the best thing ever.

I've heard from someone who knew her personally that she's actually quite far from being "sharp".

He did shift towards the center for his Senate campaign; if he isn't any more liberal in the Senate than Obama was I'd say he'd have a shot.

I think he's too boring and stiff for a national campaign.

Al Franken is lucky he ran in this year, and he has cost the party a lot of grief.

Really? You get that impression from him? To me he's always seemed pretty big 'ideas' guy.

So what about Gillibrand?

If she successfully makes the transition and holds on to the seat, I think she could be the MOST likely to appear on a national ticket, most likely as someone's running mate since there will be more pressure and expectations from parties to include women in the future.

She's certainly more appealing than Franken, Burris, Kaufman, and Caroline Kennedy for that matter.
