Corzine - 38%
Christie - 36%

Voters polled preferred Corzine to "another Republican candidate" by 36 percent to 32 percent.

They also gave him the nod over former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan (45 percent to 29 percent), Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt, R-Morris, (41 percent to 27 percent) and Franklin Mayor Brian Levine (44 percent to 27 percent).

The most important issues voters want gubernatorial candidates to talk about include: the economy/downturn in general (35 percent) and jobs (19 percent); property taxes (38 percent); education/schools (18 percent); and health care/prescription drug costs (14 percent), according to the poll.

The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll was done by telephone with 413 New Jersey registered voters from January 12 to 14. The Monmouth University Polling Institute conducted the poll for the Asbury Park Press, Courier-Post, Courier News, The Daily Journal, Daily Record and Home News Tribune.
