Any possibility that he'd run?  I've always liked him.

He needs to get re-elected first.

Does he?  By 2010, he'll have already been governor for 10 years.  An extra two years of experience wouldn't add very much.  If he actually wanted to run for prez in 2012, he might as well just retire as governor in 2010, and save himself the trouble of reelection.

I say that assuming he runs for re-election. If he just retired and ran then he would be legitimate (although he would still lose). He couldn't run after losing re-election though.

Another mediocre, at best, Republican Governor from Texas.
I bet the country will be enthusiastic after the last experience.

I like Rick Perry, and I could see myself potentially supporting him.

I know I keep jumping around from Romney to Palin to Huckabee to Barbour to Crist but honestly...I could see myself supporting nearly all of the potential GOP contenders whereas in 2005/2006 it was Allen or McCain pretty much all the way until Nov. 2008.

all signs point to Perry running for reelection in 2010. The only way he'll get nominated in 2012 is as a sacrificial lamb if Obama looks unbeatable. It'll be a long time before America wants another Texas Republican in the White House.

OK, a Republican who could only get ~38% of the vote in Texas and is about to lose a GOP primary in that state in comical fashion?

The GOP can do much better than Perry.  He's through after 2010.

Rick Perry will never be a national politician, period. It's only a result of the the Texas Democratic party's ineptitude that he has made it this far. Not that it matters much, his own party is about to sweep the rug out from under him...although, I don't know why Hutchinson would rather be the ultimately irrelevant governor of Texas than a senior U.S. senator.

She wants to be gov of Texas because it is irrelevant.  She's trying to ease into retirement and move back to Texas.  Governor of Texas is a nice, slow part-time gig that will allow her to adjust into retirement.

Perry won't run.  He's unpopular.  Plus, he's gay.

There's people out there who still believe that rumor?

Yeah, wasn't that one an obvious plant by Carole Keeton Etc.? Or was it just the specific allegation about him and the S.o.S. that was a plant?

This is not his fault, specifically, but we tried a Texas governor, and look where it got us?

Now, for Perry himself, he just seems to be a little bit too conservative for me.  I'm looking for someone moderate.  So far, Obama seems to fit the bill, but we'll have to wait and see on him.  NOTE:  for the purposes of the thread, do not turn this into a referendum on Obama.  This is about Rick Perry.

I like Rick Perry a lot. We share the same birthday. But I would never support him for President. It's pretty sad when he can only get 38% of the vote in Texas...as a Republican. Obama would beat Perry so badly...

I suppose that's a valid theory. It's not like there is another Lloyd Bentsen on the Democratic side to sweep in and steal the seat from the Republicans in 2012. Rick Noriega is about as good a candidate as the state Democrats could field and well...he just got beat down by Big Bad John...

They seem to have a decent chance with Bill White.
