http://www.orangecountygov.com/documentView.asp?docID=5542

The KJ precincts in Monroe are numbered 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 22, 27, 28, 29, and 31.

The vote totals: McCain 2757, Obama 199

But there's an even quirkier thing that's obvious when it comes to the bloc voting.

McCain got more votes on the Independence Party line in precincts 9, 10, 15, 16, 20, 22, 27, 28, 29, and 31.

McCain got 1758 Independence party votes out of Monroe, and 1450 of them were from Kiryas precincts.

As for the 19th District ( http://www.orangecountygov.com/documentView.asp?docID=5524 ).. same thing.. John Hall wins big, and KJ voters voted for him on the Independence Party line.

Precinct 09: Hall 208, Lalor 51 (Hall wins 196 votes on the I line)
Precinct 10: Hall 218, Lalor 35 (Hall wins 203 votes on the I line)
Precinct 14: Hall 147, Lalor 12 (Hall wins 142 votes on the I line)

need I go on?

So.. in conclusion, KJ voted on the Independence line at a higher rate than anywhere else has ever voted for the Independence Party of New York.

This is definitely the coolest thing I've learned all week.

Is this replicated in other super-Orthodox areas?  Any idea why?

It's amazing how insular these communities are.  Bloc voting down to the party line.  A little scary.

Perhaps they are sending a message to the local Dems and Reps that they are free agents and to not to try to stop them from gobbling up land and screwing with local water rights.

well, someone probably figured out that it would be really easy to vote for John McCain and John Hall by just voting Independence. But they carried it down to the State Senate and Assembly (both Republicans).

It is a message: Back our interests or else.  Disagree with their agenda and outsized expansion and you can be labeled an anti-semite

I don't know.  In the past, they've had no problem with their members forgetting to vote for their indicated candidates.  Whatever they do, they sure drive the point home.

I'm inclined to think the reasoning is a lot more ideological and unpleasant.  From what I've read about these communities, they're not to be screwed with.

Kiryas Joel is very disturbing. And, yes, it's all about the political message. And the Orange County government will continue to look the other way for their votes while making alarmed noises for the benefit of Woodbury, Harriman, etc.

It was overwhelmingly for the Bushes in 1992, 2000, and 2004, but oddly enough for Clinton in 1996.

How have Schumer, Hillary, and Spitzer done?

The establishment supported all three (85+% support; the conformity is a bit stronger when they back Republicans).

Who makes the calls here?  Does the Rebbe, or someone else?

There's a kind of clique of significant religious figures who call the shots. But I think the Grand Rabbi has most of the authority.

Anyway, KJ is in the news again:

To an extent, that's just a statistical oddity. The cost of living of a family with six children is a lot higher than that of a family with one child, but it is a lot less than the cost of living of eight single-person households.

Well, of course. When you notice that #2 is Athens, Ohio and #3 is State College, Pennsylvania, you realize that the "poverty" statistics are really just a good way of finding unusual communities.

And the poorest city in the United States is Carbondale, Illinois...cough.
