He did fine work at the Peninsula Campaign and Gettysburg and receives a far worse rap about the Indian Wars than he deserves (as  General Sheridan was by far the true "war criminal", whetever the heck that means anymore, of the 1880s). However, the violation of the Black Hills Treaty and the Massacre at Sand Creek are major blemishes on his career and can not be pardoned by the muses.

All in all, he is neither one of these trite statements, so I call him, "An overconfident soldier who had his weakenses and strenghts."
