It was 5 and a half inches outside my house at 9am. It's still snowing.

The entire London bus network has been suspended and the Highways Agency are advising against travel.

OK, how do you Americans cope?

Depends on the state. Here we react with general panic and confusion.

My area has an arsenal of salt trucks that go out the night before the snow and periodically after the snow.  There are also many snow plows that plow the streets.  Snow isn't the main problem around me, it's the ice.

Good luck with your snow!! Tongue

Is the snow good for snowball fights or does it just fall apart?  That's the most important question Tongue

It isn't much for the NYC area, either. Not quite enough to call out of work since the buses would be running, slowly, although it would probably close most but not all of the local schools.

My town's public school district only closes, most of the time, if the buses aren't running.  Or, the ice is really terrible.  Our super intendant only closes school in the most horrific of conditions....  Every district around us will have no school and we still have to go. Angry

When I saw the thread title I was thinking it was gong to be about something the BNP was doing. Grin  5½ inches doesn't require snow boots unless you intend on being out all day in it.

Generally if we have 6 or more inches of snow, people don't go out much.  If its less than that, they'll go out during the day, but not at night.

We have a large plow fleet that spreads sand and salt on the roads and they get plowed quickly during the storm and after.

The key to driving in snowy conditions is

SLOW DOWN!!!!!!

The problem with people not used to driving in snow is that they drive too fast.. they don't have a feel for the road when its icy and they react as they always do.. which can be fatal in bad snow conditions.

Also you should keep a very large distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.... 4 or 5 seconds when you count using a stationary object.

If you're going 35mph with plenty of room ahead of you, if you need to stop and start sliding you'll likely get control of the car back and if you do go into the ditch, it'll be at a slow enough speed that it won't hurt you or cause a crash.

It's easy.  Grab a shovel.  Don't wait for the government to come to the rescue.  Smiley
