Um... is this for real? Or is North Korea just saber-rattling?

Uhh...North Korea seeing what they can and can't get away with under the Obama Administration?  You did see something like this coming right?

Doesn't North Korea make these types of declarations periodically?

IMO, this has little or nothing to do with Obama and is produced for internal consumption. What better way to divert attention from Kim Jong-Il's weak state and worries about his succession than raising the prospect of a war?

But only about 2 weeks after Obama takes office?  Coincidence maybe, but I don't think so.

Yup. It's North Korea making noise because...

a) They want attention. If Obama and the US ignores them too much, they don't get nice concessions in negotiations.
b) They want to test the waters. This doesn't mean anything serious, it just means they'll be diplomatically aggressive for a little while.

They know the consequences of war with South Korea. Unless of course they think China would back them up in that event.

Considering how often North Korea blusters, it very well could be coincidence.  It was about time for them to blister anyway.

Indeed, and if they start the war I doubt China would back them up. Frankly I kind of hope they do - sounds terrible, I know, but frankly a war might just be the best chance for freedom in North Korea.

I can't wait until this government collapses. I really do worry though that when Kim is on his death bed, he might say, "What the hell do I have to lose now?" and launch a few missiles.

No but it's a reasonable speculation since North Korean provocations for the last several years have been repetitive and more tepid.

That's my fear too.  It's always better to tie your dictators to a pole and shoot them when they grow too distasteful.

They know the consequences of war with South Korea. Unless of course they think China would back them up in that event.

The South Korean armed forces, while not as numerous as the forces of North Korea, are well equipped, well trained and competently led.

So, yes, they might be able to defeat a North Korean attack, and certainly can inflict horrible casualties on the North Koreans if South Korea is invaded.

As to the Obama administration, I have no doubt they will rush to "negotiate" with the North Koreans.
