According to the Atlas Forum, the greatest Senator in US history is:

Robert M. La Follette, Sr. (R-WI, 1906-1925)

He narrowly defeated both Lyndon Johnson (D-TX, 1949-1961), and Daniel Webster (W-MA, 1827-1841, 1845-1850).  The remaining Senators were:

4.  Henry Clay (W-KY, 1806-1807, 1810-1811, 1831-1842, 1849-1852)
5.  Mike Gravel (D-AK, 1969-1981)
6.  Robert Taft (R-OH), 1939-1953)
7.  Robert Kennedy (D-NY, 1965-1968)
8.  Hubert H. Humphrey (D-MN, 1949-1964)
9.  Barry Goldwater (R-AZ, 1953-1965, 1969-1987)
10.  George McGovern (D-SD, 1963-1981)

we could have done better. But he was ok. I voted for LBJ, even though he may not have been democratically elected in 1948.

Not a terrible choice.

An acceptable list, though not one I'm terribly thrilled with. I'm disappointed Howard Baker, Jr. got so little support.

I'm disappointed Barack Hussein Obama got so little support.  Those four years were amazing.

Henry Clay was the correct answer.

Gravel, Kennedy, and McGovern don't deserve to be on here.

Kennedy probably doesn't, but the other two were fantastic Senators.

They still don't deserve to be among the 10 greatest.

McGovern and Gravel at least deserve consideration, though Gravel at number 5 is probably a stretch... I agree that RFK should not be anywhere near this list, but apparently above average competence + Kennedy name = greatness.

Kennedy might have been an average senator but he represented one of the most points in American history. There was magic brewing, I tells ya.
