There is no way that was a joke.

What would happen if Specter were to lose the primary?  Would Toomey have a greater chance at winning in the general if Specter were to win?

It depends whether or not the unions support him, IMO, which isn't going to happen if he keeps opposing labor and every item on Obama's agenda

or maybe he is that funny?  Here he is doing improv:

Not in a spontaneous interview, Lunar.  Specter was probably practicing for that performance for days or even weeks.

but here he is in that exact same interview:

Did you know Dole in your Kansas days?

No. When I moved to Russell in the eighth grade, he was much older, but in the intervening years I’ve pretty much caught up to him.

I assume this was before he was appearing on television in Viagra commercials.

From reliable sources, he did not need Viagra then.

But then again, it didn't even sound like a joke.  Specter doesn't sound like a guy who would adore Franken.  He isn't even that far off ideologically from Coleman (ok, maybe he is a bit different, but I don't understand why he would trash a fellow Jewish Republican).

It's possible it was a joke, if you look at it in context, but it was still really stupid and he should have known it wouldn't have been taken as such.

The only joke here is Arlen Specter.

What would happen if Specter were to lose the primary?  Would Toomey have a greater chance at winning in the general if Specter were to win?

The positive for Toomey would be that he doesn't have "'Moderate' blood" on his hands. Sestak would get the blame for that and that would help Toomey. Then again, with Specter putting his foot in his mouth so often these days, I'm beginning to wonder if he's less electable in the General...

Specter backtracks on Coleman! LOL, this is getting ridiculous. Does this man not have any principles, or does he just make things up as he goes along?

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) reversed himself from comments he made in an interview in which he said he wanted Norm Coleman (R) to prevail in the disputed Minnesota Senate race against Al Franken (D), CQ Politics reports.

Said Specter: "In the swirl of moving from one caucus to another, I have to get used to my new teammates. I'm ordinarily pretty correct in what I say. I've made a career of being precise. I conclusively misspoke."

Asked who he's backing now in elections, Specter said, "I'm looking for more Democratic members. Nothing personal."

At least the joke response was plausible. The "I am good friends with Norm" would at least won him pseudo-moderate cred. But saying, "oops, I confused my talking points" has to be the worst explanation ever.

This was a colossal blunder on the part of Obama and Reid.

Specter will probably suffer a bit of foot-in-mouth disease from the media for at least a few days.

Is Ridge actually considering running? If so, I'd suddenly become enthusiastic about this race again. He might actually have a chance at defeating Specter in the general if it isn't a big Republican year.

Would he be able to beat Toomey in a primary? Or is he deemed too moderate as well?

A big Dem year, you mean?

if Specter loses the Dem primary could he run as an independent?  (unfortunately I seem to recall PA law wouldn't allow this to work)

I don't believe so, no. Otherwise he would have done that in the Republican Primary.

He cannot run as an Independent after losing a primary for that same office.

Yeah, he doesn't have the same luxury as Lieberman. It would be amusing if he switched to the Dems only to have Sestak pull ahead of him in that primary.

Could he run as an Independent for Governor?

Uh...sure...but Specter lost the desire to run for Governor in the 1970s. He'd never run for that again.

LOL

I'm a hack because I'm talking about the dynamics of the race? Wow!
