Why would the country that is basically made up totally of Church leadership not believe in a theory that has been accepted and taught by the Church for a long time?

Yeah, Phil's right. The Catholic Church is a major FF when it comes to evolution. Catholics in general are. One of the most famous evolution proponents is also an ardent Catholic, though his name escapes me at the moment.
