So what if Nixon's role in the Watergate scandel had have broken in early October of 1972.  Are the election results significantly different?  Could McGovern actually have won under such a scenario?  Please discuss with maps if you like:)

Close victory for McGovern.
The map begins to look like moder elections, with west coas allied with northeast and northern midwest against south and west.
McGovern : 49%, 273 E.V.
Nixon : 49%, 265 E.V.

This is tricky because it would be a race between two very unpopular candidates. I still believe Nixon would win in a narrow victory.
