Gov. Rick Perry appears to be wearing out his welcome in Texas, and starts out as the underdog against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.), according to a new poll.

The Public Policy Polling poll shows Hutchison leading Perry, 56 to 31 percent, in the Republican primary. Hutchison has sky-high approval ratings, with 76 percent of Texans approving of her, with only 15 percent disapproving.

Perry’s approval ratings are also solid, with 60 percent approving and 27 percent disapproving.

But among voters who approve of both Perry and Hutchison, Hutchison leads by 16 points, 49 to 33 percent.

“Rick Perry is in grave danger of losing in the primary,” said PPP pollster Dean Debnam. “It’s partly because he’s worn out his welcome with a certain segment of the Republican electorate, but the even bigger reason is that Kay Bailey Hutchison is just a lot more popular than him.”

Perry is one of the nation’s longest-serving governors, having served in the governor’s mansion since 2000. He is seeking a third full term this year.

The primary will probably have more Indys/Dems playing on the GOP line than PPP thinks, which means Hutchinson's numbers should be stronger.

Seems to me that Texans haven't gotten the memo of the Sarah Palin endorsement.
That should be enough to turn the race around.

If Perry is smart he should step aside and run for Hutchison's senate seat.

Wasn't Perry really hated back in 2006? I seem to remember people attributing his re-election victory to having three viable opponents.

His standing improved significantly, but there was a period where a sole Democrat would have stood a chance.

Makes sense, though it seems funny that Chris Bell's numbers also improved over time.

That was just the hardcore Democrats realizing that he was the (D) in the race, nothing more...

Perry's dead in the water...

Palin was stupid to endorse him, but what's new?

I doubt anyone cared.

Anyway, what killed Perry (and what will continue to kill him) was his support for the Trans-Texas Corridor (which has been scrapped).

The only way Perry could win would be to run to the right of Hutchinson and base his coalition of fundies in the burbs and rural voters.

Well, the TTC made him hated among a lot of rural voters, so...

That's why I really hope Perry doesn't drop out, it'll be a lot of fun to watch him lose.
