Clearly Idaho, because Austria is Colorado.

Vermont. It's got somewhat rugged terrain, and just leaves you alone, unless you're stupid enough to send some troops into their territory.

I'm leaning towards New Hampshire; a small, wealthy and libertarian state.

I voted New Hampshire, basically for the same reasons.

How annoying is it to create 50 poll options every time?  I imagine "very"

When I think of Switzerland the first three words that come to mind are "Germanic" "linguistically factionalized" and "mountainous." I think the state that comes closest to that is New Mexico, oddly enough, a state that isn't really a large desert like it's imagined to be.  It's got three large factions (Hispanics, Whites - the largest of whom are Germans, and American Indians) and mountains.

Although taken in an aggregate sense instead of just choosing three descriptive words, I can't imagine any state besides New Hampshire even coming remotely close.  And even then it's pretty off.

Maybe Alaska?  Independent, lots of guns, lots of mountains, and annoyed by everyone else?

I'd say Delaware, large financial/banking industry, small, a population of rather mixed ancestary. Although it's less geographically like Switzterland.

No state has three major ethnic groups and a fourth one that's really cool but nobody cares about.

You think a party like the SVP/UDC would win close to 30% of the votes in Vermont? Uh...

They'd have a better chance than in any other state in the US.

Any US states renowned for their money-laundering Nazi Gold-hiding banks which are currently insolvent in all but name?

What is Vermont like, in terms of its gun laws?

I voted for Alaska. Obviously there are huge differences but no other state is really comparable to Switzerland imo.

Super-conservative, super-rich rural mountain state with a thriving financial industry?

Anyone thinking Vermont is completely off the map, imo. Switzerland would not have produced Ben & Jerry ice-cream...my grand-mother lives there and it's like being thrown back to the 1920s when you get there.

New Hampshire is sort of closest, but I don't know if they have the xenophobia down. Switzerland is probably the culturally most backwards country in Western Europe and they are, in competition with Belgium and Italy, the most racist country in Western Europe (and I honestly think Switzerland takes it pretty clearly). I don't know if Colorado comes closer?

Remember, a party that campaigned on themes such as killing tax-collectors and kicking out the blacks won the election there with 30% of the vote.

Indeed. Switzerland is a weird, fascinating country. They're quite isolationist generally, but there remains a strong progressive movement (the Swiss Greenies are, what, the second-strongest Greenies in Europe after Luxembourg?).

The Swiss Greens are powerful in part because they're the only significant party opposed to the government, although the impending collapse of the Swiss party system is likely to upend that reality. Of course, it is certainly true that Switzerland has a large demographic group which one would expect to be predisposed to voting Green: environmental workers and those working in environmental tourism.

And, technically speaking, the strongest Greens in Europe are the Latvian Greens, although that's a little questionable.

You all have no understanding of Switzerland, which, despite its banking laws (really more of an anachronism kept around due to a strong lobby, think of Bermuda), is a quite authoritarian/culturally conservative country. Probably the most such in western or central Europe, in fact.

For all of those reasons, I have to go with Idaho. Except that I voted Alaska before stopping and thinking about it again. I suppose you could consider Swiss banking analogous to Alaskan oil, so it does fit somewhat.

Most certainly not. They're in a coalition with the Centre Party, an agrarian party which is by far the strongest party in the coalition. Of the 18 seats held by the Centre-Greens coalition, only 4 are Greenies.

I'd wager that if the Latvian Greens ran alone, they'd poll quite poorly.
