According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Newt Gingrich is considering a run for president in 2012.

Said Gingrich: "Callista and I will look seriously and we'll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January, 2011, Gingrich told reporters during a sit-down interview before last night's speech.

"We'll look seriously at whether or not we think its necessary to do it. And if we think it's necessary we'll probably do it. And if it isn't necessary we probably won't do it."

If Newt gets in...he will have a very strong shot, IMO.

I don't think Gingrich is ever going to run.  He just wants to pretend that he's going to run, so people will pay attention to him.  He'll come up with some excuse for not running in 2012, just like he did in 2008.  Then he'll start working on excuses for 2016.

Newt Gingrich is too intellectual for the GOP base. He will do far better at drawing media attention than in drawing votes.

Indeed, or a few.  Guiliani would have been the first thrice-married president, but perhaps Newt can finally shatter that highest of glass ceilings.

Being socially liberal, of course, Giuliani has never grandstanded on family values to the extent that Newt (not only Pond Life by name but Pond Life by nature) has

Guiliani is not socially liberal. Warmongering and fascism aren't socially liberal views.

I do not see Gingrich running in 2012. By that time it will have been more than a decade since when he last held public office. If he really wanted to run for president, then he probably would have done so in 2008.

Oh, and Gingrich has just said that he does "not particularly" want to run in 2012 in the first place: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090308/ap_on_el_pr/gingrich2012_1.

And Holmes is right. Why do you have a red avatar?

Fascism...

Anyway, I think what Dave meant is that Giuliani's rhetoric isn't rife with references to "traditional family values," a "Christian nation," and the "sanctity of life."

I also think you already understood that.

1. I don't think he'll run.
2. If he does run, he wins the primary easily.
3. I have no clue if he beats Obama.  But I lean toward saying that he doesnt'.

I think if the economy's still bad in 2012, a candidate Newt would actually help Obama make his case for another four years.  The Dem spin will be to point out the 'prosperity' of the 90's, and how Newt hated Clinton, which means he hates prosperity.

And I can imagine BONBC having a field day with the infidelity thing, this soundbyte in particular - "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

Plus, they'll say he's part of the old Washington establishment.

So he'll be painted as a prosperity hating hypocrite dinosaur.  And enough people will believe it to give Obama an easy victory.

I have to agree that I doubt Gingrich will attempt a run. I think he’s a very smart man, and he has to know his chances would not be good. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he have the worst approval ratings of a politician from either party considering a run last time around? Of course things can change, but combine that with him being out of office for a time, and I think Newt’s more content to act as a commentator and let others do the work of actually running.

Gingrich doesn't want the Presidency, IMO.  I think he's happy promoting his cause for conservatism (American Solutions).  And keeping these rumors alive is one way to do that.

Callista?  Is that the latest one?

I saw an interview with her a few weeks ago, and there seems to be something "off" about her.

Did Newt granstand on family values?  I didn't know him to be a big social issues guy.

Jake Tapper is fairly objective journalist
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=2937633

It's worth noting that Gingrich did not limit his comments about Clinton and the Democrats to legalistic allegations of perjury.

Constantly espousing family values even while he carried on an affair, Gingrich linked his party to wholesome family values and Democrats to, well, something else.

During the 1992 Democratic National Convention, Gingrich said, "Woody Allen having nonincest with a nondaughter to whom he was a nonfather because they were a nonfamily fits the Democratic platform perfectly."

In 1994, Gingrich linked Democrats to Susan Smith, a woman who had murdered her two children in 1991.

"I think that the mother killing the two children in South Carolina vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we need to change things," he said. "The only way you get change is to vote Republican."

I love to hear Newt speak. He's an extremely smart guy and I like his ideas. That said, I would be surprised if he ran. If he does, he'll run if he's going to lose so he can get his ideas out there.
