It went largely unnoticed because the fight is in the Senate, but the NY Assembly passed the gay marriage bill 89-52 today. Five Republicans voted in favor. Not sure on how many Democrats voted against, but going by the final result, it must have been between 16 and 25 (depends on whether the 9 who didn't vote were all Democrats, all Republicans, or a mixed group).

The Assembly passed a gay marriage bill in 2007, too. The vote then was 85-61, so this result was a pretty substantial improvement.

Christie has vowed to veto it in NJ if he becomes Governor.

Then Christie must be stopped. It falls upon the shoulders of Corzine to slay evil.

This is the marriage equality bill in Rhode Island. It's called H-5744, and it has 33 co-sponsors from the House.. I couldn't find the list from the Senate. The hearing is tonight, and the majority of the members on the Judiciary committee are also co-sponsors. Smiley

It'll be passed when Corzine is still governor regardless if he wins or loses, so Christie is very irrelevant.

Oh, and now the meme against marriage equality is that Obama doesn't even support it and it makes beauty pageant winners cry in exchange for money and possibly the chance to pose nude, lie about it and get away with it again.

And in New Hampshire, the Republicans' arguments are that the bill doesn't give photographers and caterers the right to deny to work at the marriages. Photographers and caterers.

It's on the governor's desk. I'm guessing he's waiting 5 days for it to become law without his signature.

I should have googled before I answered. It's not on his desk yet for technical reasons.

Not yet. There's a long process in New Hampshire where a passed bill has to go to some committee in the House to be looked over for grammar errors and stuff, then a Senate committee, then it needs to go to the Secretary of State for something similar, then it goes to the governor. It can take from a day to a month.

The civil unions bill was passed at the end of April, and was only able to be signed at the end of May.

So, how's the gay marriage movement going in South Carolina?  We got the first two primary states out of the way.

That'll take a long time given we have a constitutional amendment that not only bans recognizing gay marriage, but any form of gay civil union.  Our amendment process requires two different General Assemblies approve the amendment, with a referendum approving it as well in between them.  Even if magically everyone in this state suddenly became in favor if it, it couldn't happen before 2013 at the earliest, and 2031 would be optimistic, and 3102 would not be impossible.

However, this issue has been nailed down so tight here, the GOP can't use it as a wedge issue.

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2009/05/gop-marriage-bombshell.html

As I recall, the NY Senate needs three Republican switches to pass the bill (thus two more), or else for some of the five Democrats opposed to switch.

Ahh, it's that one guy... I forget his name. That one senator. Well if it's the guy who I'm thinking about, then it wouldn't be that big a deal. But if it's someone else, then good. Smiley

So HB 73 is the one to watch in the next couple of days. I've heard that Lynch's amendments give religious organizations the right to discriminate, and I thought about it a little bit... and then I realized that they always had the right to discriminate, against anyone they want. I mean, if a gay couple wanted to marry in a religious building, I'm sure they would have a close relationship with the priest/rabbi/whatev who would marry them, and they wouldn't choose some random church in the middle of nowhere anyway...

It's just a reaffirmation of the first amendment.

I like it, since it gives people like Lynch and other people a "way out" for a "compromise" position.

At least 10/13 DC council members back marriage equality + Pelosi not acting on any bill + possible backlash for Congress from the public if it does act on it + a very supportive mayor = marriage equality in DC's future

OK, I was wrong.  They actually found a new way to wedge.

Haha. In states like New Hampshire and Maine, legislators enact marriage equality, and in South Carolina, they do stupid things like that. It shows a regional divide.

Look at this, a 9 year old Denver child organized a rally tomorrow Smiley Cute.
