While it was almost surely self-defense and probably justifiable, the fact that many people in this thread are cheering this guy on is disturbing to say the least.

I don't mind that part........but what about the character of the individual?  He was a good decent honest man......we need more of those in the White House.

Well, at the time of Ford good honest decent Presidents were not unusual - we'd had nothing but good honest decent men all the way from FDR through LBJ, and then Ford and Carter.  Only Nixon was a scumbag.  Of course then after Carter it was all just scumbags until just here recently.

Note the emphasis I made on LBJ. He did some good things, notably civil rights, but he wasn't the most err... honest man.
