One World Trade Center will be the name instead.  link

Good.  Freedom Tower was a silly name.

I see that we are finally starting to see some progress on the damed thing.  It's about time.  Who are we blaming for the delay this year?

Agreed, just seems so provocative.

HEY!  Unions may often be violent and corrupt but that doesn't make them terrorists.  They gave us the 8 hour workday, the 15 minute coffee break, the 2 hour mid day nap and the economy crushing pension plan, how can they be bad?

Damn. I am pissed that they changed it. The name was a symbol of us standing united against the terrorist meance. Also "World Trade Center One" should not ever be used again because of the tragedy.

Good.  It was an incredibly tacky name.  Also, the fact that it was deliberately designed to be 1776' tall is tacky too, but that decision is apparently sticking.

Agree 100%.

I still think it's ugly.  They should've just rebuilt the Twin Towers.

hahaha

In all seriousness, though, this was the best idea I'd seen (note the memorialized footprints of the old towers)...

Whatever with the name, WTC should still be the name of the area, and yes, they should have just re-built them.

I'm glad that we're past the silliness of using "Freedom" for everything.

Still think the original WTC should have been exactly rebuilt, though.

I'm glad they're changing this.  We shouldn't be memorializing an office building.  A real memorial is being built for that.

I don't really understand how anyone thinks the old towers are any prettier than the new ones though.  I understand the sentiment behind rebuilding the same towers again but the new towers are much more aesthetically pleasing IMO.  The old towers were just giant gray rectangles sticking up in the air.

Yeah, the old ones were among the ugliest skycrapers ever.

I do remember someone joking ca. early 2002 that, from a purely aesthetic/architectural pov, the City of New York owed Osama bin Laden a massive thankyou for taking those disgraces down.

not a very great joke....but not entirely untrue completely going by the look of the buildings.

Yeah... it wasn't so much a joke, more a true statement you can't say with an entirely straight face for obvious reasons.

I'd like to plant a wood in her, if you know what I mean!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

If you provide the know-how for installing a cubicle in a treetop.

I'm sure that all these technical details can be dealt with on some future occasion.

Truth is they needed an actual address for the towers. It also helps sell the building to investors and those planning on moving in. But most people will still refer to it as the Freedom Tower. I know I will.

Good.  It was an incredibly tacky name.  Also, the fact that it was deliberately designed to be 1776' tall is tacky too, but that decision is apparently sticking.

Agree 100%.

I still think it's ugly.  They should've just rebuilt the Twin Towers.

Those were a thousand times uglier. I never heard anyone say anything positive about them until they were gone, but people complained all the time about how they were an eyesore.

Anyway, I side with those who think it was a great opportunity for redeveloping a spot in Lower Manhattan that would otherwise have been cluttered with out-of-date buildings forever. I generally like the current plans, although they could definitely have done better. Rebuilding the old design would have been a really stupid choice and even more childishly symbolic than the 1776'-tall Freedom Tower.

You may be right, but when the choice comes to rebulding the ugly thing that was already there, or replacing it with something just as ugly that will change the NYC skyline, I'd rather rehabilitate the skyline.  If it's based on sentimentality, then so be it.

I don't find anything symbolic about rebuilding what was there.  It seems like the more logical thing to do.
