I doubt this happens, but I have three questions...

1 - If a large number of cons leave the GOP, do they go Libertarian?

2 - If not Libertarian, where?

3 - How big will Obama's electoral landslide be in 2012?

What a joke. Gingrich is a moron and is just as guilty as other neoconservatives.

I certainly hope they do it though, the Democrats will crush them coast to coast.

I get the feeling Gingrich is just whoring for attention as usual.

In what way?

He's morally bankrupt, ethically questionable, and has an authoritarian streak. Not to mention one of the biggest egos in all of politics.

Fact of the matter is, if Gingrich got his way, it would have ended up on similar lines to the Bush Administration which he so loves to "criticize" and his positions are virtually identical outside of his "we need to really cut the government!" rhetoric.

As Bgwah so aptly summarized, he's just an attention whore.

Roll Eyes

By the way, if this happened, they would need to form a totally new third party because I don't like the current choices or I'd just be an Independent.

How could you not like Newt "Re-examine the First Amendment" Gingrich? Tongue

I've always been mixed/lean negative on Newt but my eye roll is at the idea, not really at him personally.

I think if anyone did break off this is what would happen.  If a large bloc of voters would have jumped to the Libs they would have by now.

But if you became an Independent, how often would you still vote GOP?

Anything is possible over the next 3-5 years.  Anything.  Can't really say that enough, actually.

Btw, this type of party would almost certainly not be either small "l" or big "L" Libertarian in origin or belief.

Oh, I assumed this meant the GOP would crumble and a new third party or some other current third party would replace it.

I don't think the GOP would ever die completely.  The premise is more that they get relegated to third party status.

"There's a room somewhere with dozens of big filing cabinets labeled 'Newt's ideas'. Right on top of one of those cabinets is a little box labeled 'Newt's good ideas'."

Don't remember which Republican said that, but he was a wise man.
