Let's say that Al Gore wins the Presidency in 2000 and is reelected in 2004.

After 9/11, President Gore does not go into Iraq, but pursues the war on terror more in Afghanistan.

Let's also say that the economic crisis and Wall Street meltdown happens as in real life, in 2007, a few months before the 2008 election.

In this scenario, John McCain was the Republican nominee in 2004, and was defeated in a fairly close election by President Gore.

In 2008, the Democrats nominate Senator Hillary Clinton for President and Senator Evan Bayh for Vice President.

The Republicans nominate former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for President.  Romney pushes his successful business and economic expertise, and that he is the one who can turn the economy around.  He blames 8 years of Democratic inaction for the economic situation, and campaigns that Hillary Clinton  would simply be a continuation of the Gore administration.  Romney picks South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham for Vice President.

Romney picks former Florida Governor Jeb Bush for Vice President, and Jeb enthusiastically takes on the task.  Remember, George W Bush was never President.

Please discuss how this election would turn out, using maps if you wish.

Wait, is Graham Romney's VEEP, or is it Bush?

Either way, Romney probably wins the GOP base plus NH and OH, maybe PA

Sorry, you're right.  I took out the part where Romney picks Lindsey Graham.  He picks Jeb Bush.

I was thinking first of Graham, who would also be a good pick I believe, but changed it to Jeb, without removing Graham.

He mentioned they nominate McCain.

After 16 years of Democratic rule and a deteriorating economy, I imagine a huge Romney-slide.

Romney wins, 359-179, by about 6 percentage points in the popular vote.

Romney would have destroyed Clinton.

Romney would destroy Clinton, even worse than Obama's 2008 victory. Americans would be tired of Democratic rule, and would be soley blaming them for the economic collapse.

I can't comprehend 8 years of Gore. That's a scary thought. I'll post a map on Monday when I'm on a different computer.

It wouldn't have been as scary as 8 years of Bush Jr. Even though what would have come after Gore might have been very scary.

I'd much rather have 8 years of Gore and 4-8 years of Romney than 8 years of Bush and 4-8 years of Obama.

I would flip California simply because under this scenario Hispanics would probably be only marginally Democratic.

There is a solid chance Massachusetts would flip in this scenario, as well.
