I don't know. The first question is whether the Orthodox or Catholics are more gay friendly. Once we know that, then we can decide whether the poster should be put in the Serb or Croatian slot.   I already know what ethnicity is best for me. Tongue

I'm guessing Torie would be a Slovene, which is what he's referring to.

I have a beard and I'm married, so that puts me in the Eastern Orthodox camp. Also, the Croats have by far the worst record for anti-Semitism during World War II in Yugoslavia, although it was a sideshow to what they were doing to the Serbs. Croatia had the most stringent version of the Nuremberg laws of any Nazi ally.

Montenegrins were 5% of the population of the last version of Yugoslavia, speaking the same language as everyone else but different in one key respect, so that seals the analogy.

Just so there is a list (I got interested in the Balkans heavily during the Bosnian and Kosovo wars), here is what I consider the ethnicities in the former Yugoslavia:

1. Orthodox Serb in Serbia and the breakoff area of Bosnia
2. Muslim Serbs in the The Sandzak which is part of Serbia
3. Muslim Serbs in Bosnia
4. Muslim Serbs in Kosovo
5. Albanian Muslims concentrated in Kosovo; some in Montenegro
6. Serbian Montenegrins
7. Croats in Croatia and parts of Bosnia
8. Slav Macedonians (Serb)
9. Albanian Muslims in Macedonia
10. Hungarians (there are a couple of hundred thousand in the north part of Serbia or something)
11. Roma (Gypsies - Yugoslavia has more than its share)
12. Slovenes

hmmm... Bosnian?  I only know two Bosnians... and they were both very friendly and courteous but a little bit crazy.  I mean that in a good way... I've also never seen Muslims hold their liquor like the Bosnians I know (they're not really very devout, obviously)

What about the Bulgarians? Or the Vlachs, for that matter?

The Vlachs are all gone now. Most went to Rumania believe it or not long ago, and the last ones faded out I think in the early 20th century. Bulgarians live in the former Yugoslavia?  That I did not know, or once new, and forgot. Are they in Eastern Macedonia or something?

I would have no clue.  I'm inclined to say Serbian because they were Allied with the Brits.  Interestingly I've had Slovene and Croat friends.

To summarize the articles I've given above:
They're still quite a few Vlachs (about 50000), mostly in the northeast. This is apart from the Romanians, who live mainly in eastern Voivodina.
Bulgarians live in the Western outlands, a formerly Bulgarian territory that was annexed by Yugoslavia after WWI. Many have assimilated, but there about 20000 left. Apart from that there is a small group of Banat Bulgarians, who are Catholic and live in eastern Voivodina (most of those live in Romania).
Prior to 1944, the Macedonians were mostly considered to be Bulgarian, but today they consider themselves a separate nation. And they're certainly not Serbs, as you seem to think.
There were also some people who declared themselves Yugoslavian, but I don't think they count as a separate ethnicity.

Thanks Gmantis for your research. I appreciate it!  Smiley

And you are right that the folks not Albanian in Macedonia are not Serbian. I meant Slav. They speak a different language than Serbo-Croatian among other things. I don't think their Macedonian language is the same a Bulgarian however. In addition, Bulgarians have some Bulgar blood in them (the Bulgars are are a Turkic tribe) that is not Slav, and I don't think that is the case with Macedonians, but I could be wrong.

Here is a wiki article on the Vlachs that is interesting. As I recall, back when they were best known as being itinerant horse traders.

Thanks, but "research" is too strong a word - most reasonably educated people around here know these things.

All these things are controversial. According to some the Bulgars were Turkic, according to others Iranians; according to some, they didn't settle in Macedonia, according to others they did and so on. Generally, Macedonian is mutually inteligible with Bulgarian - I would say that some dialects in Bulgaria are less understandable than Macedonian. Most of the difference stems from the two standard languages being taken from very distant dialects in the dialect continuum, and the great amount of Serbian borrowing in Macedonian. Considering the great differences among dialects in some languages calling Bulgarian and Macedonian the same language is not too unreasonable. Of course, this is largely a political question...

By the way, I didn't know you had a Bulgarian connection gmantis until I just looked at your profile. If I had known that, I would have been a tad more obsequious and less didactic. Tongue

It could be worse - you could have asked me whether I've ever been in Eastern Europe Smiley
