The way that the question was phrased here wasn't the emphasis I wanted.  "Circumstances" really makes it seem like the context around the specific crimes instead of the aggregate/summation of all crimes.  hmmm

Often, yeah....lots of sentences here in the U.S. are completely absurd...especially drug offenses, of course....

I voted neutral, but this.  People who are repeatedly violent to other people should be locked up forever or at least until they are no longer a physical threat to others.

Some should be shortened but not others. Many of the druggies should be released immediately. Some of the violent ones need to spend more time in halfway houses, and have a more careful plan of reintroduction into society. To do that however, the sentences need to be long to have such control over their transition period. And a few need to die.

There are plausible reasons for saying that some guy busted with a joint on him should just get a fine, or be told to stay home.

But reducing prison sentences at a time when genuine bastards are getting off lightly makes me go "time out please." All I want is to make sure that the rapists and murderers are dealt with, harshly. Then I'd focus on the trivial crimes.
