I really think she would be.  I agree completely with her that Asians should adopt American first names, it really makes it easier on them if nothing else.  There is nothing to stop them from keeping their birth name, but having an American one too is great.  No one can object to Asian last names, they rarely contain even multiple syllables.

Yes, they should adopt good old-fashioned American names like Jayden, Nevaeh, Caden, Haley, and Destiny.

Or Willard.

Or Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig, c**ntingwhore, etc.

Good point.  My grandfathers names were Dorondo and Giuseppe, but went by "John" and "Joe" (Giuseppe = Joseph in English), respectively.  And you're right that it's up to the person whether or not to do it, not Betty Brown.

My grandfather and his brothers had their Yiddish names replaced by the inspector at Ellis Island. I only recently learned that Lou was Leibl and Julius was Zusha.

But that particular name isn't a riff of anything in particular, right? Just checking I didn't miss something...

In my experience, Filipinos who come here have almost no chance of taking an American name. Chinese & Japanese immigrants have roughly a 50/50 chance of doing so. Other Asian nationalities will almost always take an American name. My total sample size here is probably no more than 300-400 people though, so it might not mean anything.

Steven Chu should change his name to an easier to pronounce name like Rudolph William Louis Giuliani.
Um...changing an Asian name to "Steven" is exactly what this person is advocating
Yes, but I doubt she`s fine with "Chu", either.
I really think she would be.  I agree completely with her that Asians should adopt American first names, it really makes it easier on them if nothing else.  There is nothing to stop them from keeping their birth name, but having an American one too is great.  No one can object to Asian last names, they rarely contain even multiple syllables.

Why don't you change your italian name to something american then?  This is so pathetic and the fact that people agree with her makes me sick.

I don't know what is sadder, the fact she said and thinks this or the fact that this kind of crap coming from an elected official doesn't surprise me.

French people ought to stop naming their kids William, Harry, and whatever else there is out there.

...to something more "American" apparentely:

On Tuesday, State Rep. Betty Brown (R) caused a firestorm during House testimony on voter identification legislation when she said that Asian-Americans should change their names because they’re too hard to pronounce:

“Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language — do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?” Brown said.

Brown later told [Organization of Chinese Americans representative Ramey] Ko: “Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?”

Yesterday, Brown continued to resist calls to apologize. Her spokesman said that Democrats “want this to just be about race.”

Thanks for posting this.  I think.

Man, this woman is a real...

WOW folks, as someone who was about 30 yards away when she spoke those words, in context there was no offense made, there was no shock and horror from the asians in the room. She was referencing the practice that most Asians adopt here, to have at least one name be an English one. This is a non-issue, there was no offense meant, BB is a harmless old lady.

Will this be one of the first laws passed by the new Republic of Texas?
