By the way, why is it not "Opinion of the Issue, part 45"?

Unenforceable laws should generally be removed, yes.

Of course, with regard to copyright, that is easier said than done, but considering that anyone who downloads music for free from the Internet, or even rips their friends' CD collection, is a criminal, it would be wise to move to something just a tad less draconian.

Sure, if you want to see a lack of viability for authors, or musicians, or playwrights, or any other artist.

I see it like I see the pharmaceutical industry: allow them to have long patents, secure from generics, if they put at least 50% of their profits into research; and if those profits are not on the back of ridiculous costs to those who need their product. Allow auhors, say, to have long patents, secure from scammers, if they then spend time writing new stuff to add to our cultural wealth.

Hard no, the idea is ludicrous.  And I'm possibly the biggest "pirate" on this message board.  People must be rewarded for their art...I'm always shocked and dismayed to see obvious left leaning people want to end copyright.

Maybe shocked isn't the right word.

No. Of course, that doesn't mean that existing copyright laws are perfect or that the concept of copyright shouldn't move with the times.

No. You could have made this actually interesting by providing a more nuanced position.

Creative persons should not be paid for their work?  Who on this mortal coil really believes that?  Having said that, the copyright protection period is too long - it seems like forever now. Why is it so long? The reason is that Disney pulled out all the stops to preserve its Mickey Mouse copyright, and Congress went along and extended the period. I guess Congress found the thought of Mickey Mouse entering the public domain too terrible to contemplate or something.  Surely it had nothing to do with campaign contributions and media power and influence.

My proposal:

Corporate copyrights = 30 years
Personal = Life + 15 years

How do you possibly reconcile this?

Its TOUGH sometimes and I do buy art from "lesser" artists.  I (almost) always buy NOFX's CDs (and a few others here and there) because they operate outside the music industry.  I buy a few Indy movies and have a fairly large library of purchased older movies (a small chunk of my overall collection though).  I hate the way the music and movie industry is run in this country.  It's all very corrupt and dirty.  Yeah, I still shouldn't do what I do and it's not like I do it for profit or anything...basically, I don't reconcile it.  I come up with sh**tty, halfassed escuses and it occasionally eats me up inside.

..but I do it anyway.

(and I've still given thousands of dollars to these people throughout my life...probably tens of thousands...they owe me a little...I paid to go see Throw Mama From the Train for sh**t's sake)

Yes, as they interfere with negative rights.

Also, an idea for your next question:
Should letters of marque and reprisal be issued as a way to combat piracy and terrorism?
