DEM Primary:

Cuomo: 64%
Paterson: 11%
Suozzi: 8%

A 3-point spread between Paterson and Suozzi. That's just too funny. Paterson should just not run to save himself the shear embarrassement.

Why don't they just poll Suozzi and Paterson, since that seems likely to be the race if Cuomo doesn't run.

Says who?  Suozzi shares a lot of friends and advisers in the same circles as Paterson and has explicitly said he wouldn't run against him...but that was also back when he was the favored candidate to be Lt. Governor

I wonder if I could beat Paterson if they just randomly put my name into the primary polling instead of Cuomo and Suozzi...

So no one is ready to call this race a lock?

The fix is not in?

Are the dead going to support Paterson, in the primaries?

Ambition. This is his big chance to be Governor, and if Cuomo doesn't run, its probably his best shot, because otherwise Cuomo will go for it in 2014.

Paterson isn't going to run.  He knows he would get murdered; he might as well just retire with a shred of dignity.

New York is ungovernable, especially during a recession, due to factional politics preventing making cuts to social services combined with the two-vote majority the Democrats have in one of the state legislatures, combined with the fact that New York is forced to have a balanced budget.

And he wasn't elected in his own right.  Paterson has the tendency to be overly meticulous in his decisions, to the extent that it impedes his ability to lead [see: Gillibrand, Kirsten].

But if it wasn't a recession, he'd'a'be doin' better.

Because the media that wanted him to appoint Caroline to the Senate have made him look like a fool since.

Paterson did more than enough to look like a fool himself - for example, by first standing up to the public service employee unions, claiming he would cut funding and not raise taxes on the so-called rich, and then caving on that.

That really isn't a very big part of what's happening here.

It's symbolic though of his tendency to waffle and over-deliberate instead of taking action.

He tried to govern from the center in the beginning of his unexpected tenure, getting Democrats pissed at him, and now he's raising taxes and cutting social entitlement programs... the things Democrats and Republicans both hate...
