Why don't they just poll Suozzi and Paterson, since that seems likely to be the race if Cuomo doesn't run.

Says who?  Suozzi shares a lot of friends and advisers in the same circles as Paterson and has explicitly said he wouldn't run against him...but that was also back when he was the favored candidate to be Lt. Governor

Ambition. This is his big chance to be Governor, and if Cuomo doesn't run, its probably his best shot, because otherwise Cuomo will go for it in 2014.
