Because the media that wanted him to appoint Caroline to the Senate have made him look like a fool since.

Paterson did more than enough to look like a fool himself - for example, by first standing up to the public service employee unions, claiming he would cut funding and not raise taxes on the so-called rich, and then caving on that.
