What is the largest ethnicity in your neighborhood and what is the %?
Probably the best way to do this is going to the fact finder website and look at your census tract (from the 2000 census) and get the info from there.

Anyway for my neighborhood, its Italian at 41.8%

No Census data, though the largest "visible minority" (aka non-white people) are blacks, 11% of the census tract population. 29% are visible minorities.

Language: English 37.21%, French 34.28%, 27.35% non-official, 1.07% both English and French as mother tongues.

Etnicities with more than 400 living in my zip code

German: 3689

  Irish: 1992

  English: 1172

  Italian: 1080

  Other groups: 950

  Czech: 483

  United States or American: 472

  Swedish: 421

  Norwegian: 417

  Polish: 401

And there is this:
93.2% of residents of 68124 zip code speak English at home.
1.6% of residents speak Spanish at home (52% very well, 32% well, 16% not well).
3.3% of residents speak other Indo-European language at home (56% very well, 38% well, 7% not well).
1.4% of residents speak Asian or Pacific Island language at home (76% very well, 16% well, 8% not well).
0.5% of residents speak other language at home (51% very well, 38% well, 11% not well).

It's very white around here.  Although I think most of the non-crackers in my zip code live in my neighborhood.  Hell, two of them live under my roof Smiley

I'm not able to get this for my census tract. I'm assuming I'm in the wrong place, but I can only get the breakdown of the population by race (which, with my tract being 98 percent white, isn't too helpful) and not the breakdown of each race by ethnicity.

I can't find a census tract table for ancestry that includes all of those European countries from which the descendants dominate in my census tract. Can anyone help me out?

Addendum:  Using the link above, it appears that only my city of Laguna Niguel has such data. My neighborhood does not have this data. "Other" is mostly Hispanic and Asian.

This is my zip code profile from city data( 92612 Irvine,ca). Lots of Asians account for the "other groups". Amongst whites the English actually outnumber the Germans. I never would have guessed that.

First ancestries reported:

    German: 2766

For Staten Island, it's Italian (37.7%).
For my neighborhood (Eltingville), it's Italian (49.6%).

I predict that within 15 years, it will all be Russian.

My immediate neighborhood - Definitely Irish with plenty of Germans. Good amount of Italians and Polish, too.

Didn't bother to do it by zip code since the results are basically identical to my above comment.

For all of Englewood:
· Black or African American - 39%
· South American - 8%
· West Indian (excluding Hispanic groups) - 8%
· Colombian - 7%
· Other Hispanic or Latino - 5%
· Jamaican - 5%
· Italian - 5%
· Irish - 4%
· German - 4%
· Polish - 3%
· Puerto Rican - 3%
· Russian - 2%
· Dominican Republic - 2%
· English - 2%
· Filipino - 2%
· Subsaharan African - 2%
· Asian Indian - 2%
· Central American: - 2%
· African - 1%
· Arab - 1%
· Guyanese - 1%
· Eastern European - 1%
· Haitian - 1%
· Cuban - 1%
· Mexican - 1%
· Korean - 1%
· French (except Basque) - 1%
· Hungarian - 1%
· Salvadoran - 1%
· Greek - 1%
· Israeli - 1%
· Trinidadian and Tobagonian - 1%

In a slightly sad twist of fate, there were no people of reported Dutch ancestry in my census tract, despite our town's Dutch heritage and the abundance of Dutch street names. The old Dutch Reform church is today a Korean church. (Don't move here too fast, Phil, there are 14 French scattered around.)

Also, language spoken at home:

English: 63.4%
Spanish: 26.0% (Hispanics are about 30%)
Any Asian language: 5.0% (mostly Filipino with maybe a few Koreans, essentially no others)
Other Indo-European: 4.3% (not sure why this is high, maybe some Russians but not many)

I guess the remainder is non-Asian, non-Indo-European languages; Creoles, Arabic, maybe some other stuff.

Okay.. I found the data from the 2000 census:

German- 32.2%
Norwegian- 26.4%
Irish- 11%
Swedish- 8.3%

3.1% claimed Danish and 1.9% claimed "Scandinavian", making Scandinavians the largest group overall.

In the local culture, Norwegian is by far the most visible and most celebrated followed by Irish and then Swedish with only a few homages to the local German heritage.  Most of the Germans that settled around here were protestants from areas outside of southern Germany.. unlike in central and southern Minnesota where they were primarily Catholics who are very vocal about their ancestry.

Two world wars essentially eviscerated the celebration of German culture in this country. That is why I think the Norwegians these days are more "visible."

As an anecdote, I once had a client who was a German American Catholic who grew up outside of Milwaukee. He said that even during WW II, in German bars, there was some pro Hitler sentiment, and folks still wore their "Germaness" on their sleeves. Then the newsreels of the concentration camps came out, and not only did all of that celebration of things German immediately disappear, but the German bars closed down for lack of patrons. It just wasn't cool to be German anymore.

Now, I can't swear what my client told me was true (he tended to exaggerate sometimes for the shock effect), but then again, it might be. I do know that in WWI in Davenport, Iowa (a town with a big German population on the Mississippi River), some German ancestry politicians were arrested and spent some time in incarceration. At least that is what my grandmother told me.

About 99.8% Austrians ... Tongue

I know 1 retired wealthy Dutch couple who moved in about a year ago in my neighboorhood, otherwise it's very homogeneous here.

I definitely agree with you about that, Torie.  The two world wars really disconnected many of the Germans from their homelands... but I think it's also worth mentioning that in this area, many Germans were already settled in the U.S. and moved here from elsewhere while the Scandinavians were mostly fresh immigrants.

Other Ancestries leads with 38.6 percent; Finnish isn't its own category (probably because this is one of the very few places in the USA to have much Finnish population), so that would comprise most of this. Otherwise English leads at 20.4 percent.

My two primary ancestries. I guess I'm a pretty typical resident of my town then.
