Not that worried at the moment, no. Up to 500,000 people die worldwide from the regular influenza every single year, around 40,000 of those in the United States, with around 250,000 people getting influenza here every year.

This disease is treatable, it's not really that deadly so far outside of Mexico, and we're probably going to start vaccine development really soon. Not only that, but we've got a pretty good hold on this so far, millions of effective drugs stockpiled all over the country, and we're more prepared now than ever to deal with something if it turns serious.

When it kills a few thousand people in the U.S. I'll get really worried. But I don't see that happening.

Not at all worried.  The media seems to be blowing it out of proportion.

Look at what happened today - I got an e-mail altert saying, "Swine flu claims first victim in America" only to find out that it was a young Mexican boy who was visiting the U.S.  Sure, the death occured in America, but he had been pretty sick when he actually went to the hospital.  He probably didn't have access to as good of health care as most Americans, plus he was young, so it's really not all that surprising that he didn't survive.

I just think the media is overplaying everything.

Not worried in the slightest on a personal level. It obviously won't be impacting me or anyone I know.

I am.
The number of cases is rapidly growing. Stuff like this is never good, and I really wish Americans would be more concerned. People will only start to worry when it's too late, and people start to die because of it...

SARS was also big. It died after about... half a year? Personally, I'm confident in Canada's health care, and it's only bad in less developed countries, so that doesn't apply to the US.

Not at all worried. But if I had young children, I'm sure I'd be more concerned, even though statistically there isn't a need to be.

Exactly why I'm worried.

Considering how the '18 flu started and the WHO's recent actions, yes.

Exactly why I'm worried.

If it makes a difference, flu pandemics like this are marked by unusually high mortality among young to middle-aged adults; kids and elderly, by contrast, do much better. That and the mass mobilization into training camps is why the 1918 flu was such a disaster for U.S. servicemen.

What would the average Americans worrying more do to help stop the swine flu?

I vote "not at all worried".

I posted my summarized thoughts about all of this so far so I think I'll paste it here, I think I got everything summed up nicely from my perspective.

This whole episode is a load of crap. Not worried at all. Apparently the U.S. has sent 50 million cures around the country already, so I really think even if it is some crazy "sh**t out your mouth" pandemic we can contain it.

In a way I'm nervous, but not because of the flu.    My worry is that the white rich ruling class is attempting DE- population.  Get rid of 35-40% of the poor population and their wealth is secured.

I would not be worried one iota except that the Spanish flu was pretty mild on its first pass.

So it's not the Jews or the Illuminati anymore, it is now the entire "rich ruling class".  Do they hire out for evil scientists or are evil scientists among their members?

I wonder why it is only white riches that want to off poor people?  What is it about being white as opposed to being of another race that activates the homicide gene vis a vis the impecunious as one accretes wealth?  Do you have any theories on that one?

I'm not worried.  I'm more afraid of feeling ill than dying.  Anyway it might effect the extremely old, which is potentially good for me.
