Simply serving in the Indonesian military in East Timor itself makes one a war criminal.

I wouldn't go as far as this. But even if he hadn't carried out any crimes himself, he was almost certainly aware of crimes carried out by others and he did nothing to stop them, making him nearly as bad as if he were a war criminal.

Hey, Fernandez had it coming!

That said, I'm convinced -- Yudhoyono it is.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
Somehow, I don't think that a former Suharto supporter, who abandoned him only when he was on the verge of losing power and who served in East Timor, even if he hasn't been accused of war crimes, is a good choice for Indonesian leader

I thought you wanted to view leaders relative to their country? Don't you think Yodhoyono is good for Indonesia and a better leader than most alternatives there?

But I guess he's better than Harper...

Oh, and I'll vote Pires this time.

Considering that Gustaf never seemed to be a fan of Persson, I don't get the argument he's using in defense of Harper.

No, I don't think so. Continuating the millitary tradition of interfering in politics is certainly not good for Indonesia.
And I didn't vote for Harper.

He has worked for moving the military out of politics.
