Please note that the communists were the only real internal opposition to Mussolini's regime and the later Italian Social Republic Nazi puppet state....

Ah, I guess you would've cheered Hitler on after he had all communists arrested? There are some real fascist sympathizers here, always have been.

No, but I wouldn't join political organizations, either then nor now. My sympathies would lie to the left during the war, though.

(Not with the Soviets either, just to make myself clear)

To be honest, I probably wouldn't have cheered anyone.  Because the fascists and the commies were crazy, and I am not.

If I was in Italy at the time, I would have been in either Campania or Sicily. Seeing as how Mussolini is still admired by many of the olds from that area to this day (and no, BRTD, they're not all fascists), I'm willing to bet I wouldn't have disliked him all that much. Going based off of what I know about the man now, I obviously wouldn't have supported him but I wouldn't have supported the Communists either.

This is just a typical BRTD simplistic, black and white poll and no one ought to be ashamed for voting "no" here.

You mean there's nothing to be ashamed about supporting fascism?

Oh and those olds you refer to are all disgusting trash.

AND you would have been under allied rule already - the war in Italy only began in 1943.

Yeah, Italy really needs to be replaced with "Central or Northern Italy" in the opening question.

Now, child, I may clear that there's nothing shameful about not voting in favor of the Communists here. I never said supporting fascism/Mussolini wasn't shameful. I made clear that knowing what I know now, I obviously would not have supported him.

Uh huh. The man saw to it that many of their communities were rebuilt. Now let me bold this so you can't easily twist what I'm saying...

In no way does this justify the terrible things that he did. In no way does this mean that I support him. It does, however, give a reason as to why some people admired him. It doesn't mean overall admiration for the man is right but stop being such a douche and refusing to recognize why some people thank him.

There's not much of an option except Mussolini and the communists though, I mean even the US and UK supported the communists.

OK, so you're saying there are people in Northern Ireland and Serbia who hate Catholics but you can understand it and don't consider all of them to trash?

And all I'm saying is that in the mindset of a young Italian man in the south at the time, I can't say that I wouldn't have had some loyalties to the guy after what he delivered for me and the people of the area.

If I knew what I know now, I wouldn't have wanted either and it doesn't matter that those are the only two I could pick from.

Yeah, that's correct. I may hate ignorance and, yes, it might tick me off a little more that they hate "my people" but I can understand why they feel that way. They become trash when they refuse to admit some of the wrongness in their feelings.

For example, those that I've spoken to that still admire Mussolini to an extent at least admit that he did some serious wrong.

I'd keep my mouth shut and my head on my shoulders, thank you very much.  Then promptly done the smart thing and surrender the second Allied forces made it into my town, collaborated any way possible, and distance myself from the prior regime.

EDIT:  If I'd been in the part of Italy that was briefly reborn as the Salo State, at that point I'd start gravitating towards the opposition.  Salo was doomed from the get-go, and everyone knew it.

Nope, but I sure as hell wouldn't have supported Mussolini.  Probably would've just kept my mouth shut.

I probably would have been a Socialist but I could easily see myself being a part of the Communist resistance as well.

I could never see you being a part of a resistance movement.

Sure I could be. I would have, I hope, tried to off Hitler if given the opportunity.  But I would never be a Commie. Ever. And it isn't about protecting my life style - at all. (I don't need much money to be happy really, when push comes to shove.) It is more about what it means to live the "good" life to me, in a larger sense.

The problem here, is that if the Communists had done in that particular clown, they would have never let go. They don't like letting go, as you know.  The way it worked out in the end, vis a vis Italy at least, turned out to be a better outcome.

Um, historically, I'd probably be in Germany, and have been drafted into the army, and be fighting the communists and the Allies in Northern Italy (if I were in Italy at all)...this is if I reincarnated as my maternal family.

If I reincarnated as an Italian, I'd probably support Mussolini until the Allies came and then promptly helped the Allies in whatever way I could, because I am a coward who prefers being alive to being dead.
