I can't believe we fought a war to keep this state.

Further proof why non-scientists should not have a say in science curriculum.

While states like Maine are moving forward, states like Texas are moving backwards.

As has been said before, while this legislation is terrible and school boards shouldn't be elected, but instead staffed by teachers and education experts, this really won't change anything. Real teachers will continue to teach real science and laugh off stupid attempts by the insecure religious types, while the teachers that will teach creationism or what have you are probably out in the boondocks and have been doing it illegally anyway.

Obviously, this is stupid, and the universe is clearly more than 10 billion years old.....

....but as a sidenote, I'd just like to say that very few astronomers actually believe that we know the age of the universe to 1% accuracy.  13.7 +/- 0.12 is really overstating the case in terms of how well we know the age.

Sorry, forgive my nitpicking.  Smiley

Even you have agreed that the Bible does not explicitly state the age of the universe.  So essentially the '6000 years' viewpoint that this creationist woman is touting is fiction even by your standards.

I wouldn't call it fiction.  I'd call it an educated guess.

I used to sympathise with this, but now it completely confuses me. Even from a creationism standpoint, wouldn't the 6000 year figure more closely relate to the length of human history instead of the age of the entire universe? Oh, right, now I remember.. God created the universe and everything in it in six days. It isn't creationism itself that bothers me as much as it is the die-hard literal approach to it all.

You do understand evolution occurs right? It has been proven thus the reason it is called a " SCIENTIFIC THEORY". The creationist "HYPOTHESIS" has not been proven and doesn't even have a shred of evidence to back it. I hate how people pretend both these viewpoints are equal when they are not. One has been studied extensively for over a 100 years and proven beyond a shadow of doubt. The other is backed by a bunch of crazy religious people who think the fact that science contradicts some little "fact" in the bible is going to lead to the end of christianity or whatever.

Everyone here doesn't get that maybe God created a universe with isotopes indicating that the world is older than it actually is as a way to TEST us.

Since God is omnipotent, He could have created the universe five minutes ago & given everyone a lifetime's worth of memories as well as left evidence to suggest that the universe is billions of years old. Hence the ridiculousness of YEC.

Clearly the Bible is evidence planted to lead people to believe in a universe more than five minutes old. I said that it shows why YEC is ridiculous because it requires one to dismiss empirical evidence with a handwave of "God testing us to see if we go astray." Maybe there's a messiah right now who will spread the word of the five-minute-old universe. Tongue

Maybe Kansas won't feel so bad about themselves now.  I'd have a hard time believing the majority of Texas voters would support this...

Educated in the sense of rough estimates based on evidence, not educated in the sense of scholarly.
